Please help- how do I use Brook Hill Roundabout (University)

wrong - the middle lane has an arrow for straight on only.

The correct lane is the left one , then stay in left lane on netherthorpe road and only then move into right hand lane as you go down the hill if safe (and if you need to.

That depends how you interpret straight on.

The left turn is towards Walkley and the through route is down Netherthorpe Road.

Perfectly no problem using the centre lane as long as you don't carve up somebody in the LH lane coming off the roundabout.....or vice versa.

That was obviously the City Cars driver's policy this afternoon, when I was almost rammed, approaching from Netherthorpe Road.

This morning, as a pedestrian attempting to cross Netherthorpe Road at the roundabout, I witnessed a City Car firstly go straight through a red light on a pedestrain crossing, then proceed to drive 3/4 way around the inside lane of the roundabout with his left indicator going all the way.

So much for "professional" driving.....

Look at where that middle lane goes and the way it splits on the roundabout

And then here

You can use that lane to exit straight into the right hand lane of NR.

maybe the roundabout should be replaced by traffic lights similar to what was done to the leppings lane roundabout

You can do it looking at the lines, but I don't see the point. Like I said earlier you are more likely to get hit (from people coming out of Walkley)

Don't give anyone ideas! :hihi:

Well I suppose you could , but could easily get clonked by someone going from bolsover street in the left hand or middle lane heading towards brook hill (towards west bar) who may well have assumed you were heading the same way as them before suddenly cutting them up...

I would have said that RH lane exit is only intended for cars going from upper hanover way towards netherthorpe road in the RH lane or those heading up brook hill in the RH lane to also go down netherthorpe.

I disagree that you are more likely to be hit. If a car has set off from the middle lane of Brook Hill and you are waiting to set off at Bolsover Street, you have to wait no matter which way the car is going.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.38231,-1.484483,3a,75y,138.97h,73.1t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1slTi7dFigEI_1AE2YFpAE2g!2e0!6m1!1e1

The point of looking at the lines is of course to prove that the car using the middle lane from Brook Hill is not doing anything wrong.

There would be nothing sudden about it. It's the way a large portion of the traffic flows.

I use Bolsover Street regularly, it's not at all confusing or difficult to see a car going from Brook Hill to Netherthorpe using the middle to right hand lane.

Yes it is. But we weren't talking about people coming from Bolsover Street.

It's a shame they built the tram tracks down the line where a grade separated junction was originally intended to go That would have allowed through ring road traffic to go straight under and avoid the roundabout altogether, thus reducing volumes considerably.

But we are where we are, and most of the answers above confirm that the OP should keep in the left hand lane. Going straight on or turning right are altogether scarier moves, from any of the entries to that roundabout. Drivers making maximum use of their acceleration and braking capabilities don't make it a comfortable experience.

A quick count has equal number of posters saying you can use the middle to right hand lane, as are saying left only... And I'd say the road markings support the middle to right hand (and obviously left to left as well).

Perhaps cautious drivers prefer to use the perceived more safe left to left option.

I really don't see a problem with this roundabout as in general it does keep the traffic moving.

It would move even better at peak times if they did away with the bus lane on Bolsover St,and the lane restriction on Brook Hill.

The traffic lights do ensure gaps on the roundabout traffic if you are patient enough and most problems are caused by impatient or uncertain drivers who cannot judge a suitable opportunity to join the roundabout.

From my experience its best to close your eyes, mash the accelerator and hope for the best!

I agree with Monkey, do what everyone does, close your eyes and go for it.

i wasnt aware there was lanes on brook hill just a free for all

That was obviously the City Cars driver's policy this afternoon, when I was almost rammed, approaching from Netherthorpe Road.

This is a silly question everyone knows that you speed up to at least 60mph ignore the lights and just aim you bonnet at a tiny space all the muppets will then stop and let you through problem solved.

This has been my experience.

When I'm coming down Brook Hill and indicating right to go down Upper Hanover Way, I always assume the drivers joining the roundabout from Bolsover Street and Netherthorpe Road won't give way (and they often don't), so I make my way across the roundabout carefully, leaving enough space to avoid the front of my car being taken off by an over-enthusiastic germanese binwagon (binvagen?).

Of course, coming up Netherthorpe Road and turning right to go up Brook Hill is very exciting too, when germanese binvagen flies across the 'bout from Upper Hanover Street and shoots down Broad Lane in the blink of an eye.

I don't see any cyclists tackling the roundabout; I assume they've all been killed.

God no. The removal of the leppings lane roundBout is the most stupid piece of traffic management I've ever seen.
