No User Name   10 #49 Posted December 23, 2014 Sheffield should do what Nottingham does and have free Park and ride. You still have to pay the tram fare but the parking is free whereas as Sheffield seems to charge for parking as well as the tram. Of course that's only good for out of town people buying small items. I personally get the bus as it's only a 15 minute journey for me and cheaper than parking. PS. There are as others have stated quite a few free places to park in the City Centre on a weekend. Mainly businesses with private car parks that don't open at weekends on the outskirts of the Centre.  Plenty of free places to park no more then 5/6/7 tram stops outside of the City Centre if you know where to look. shanes teeth   10 #50 Posted December 23, 2014 I think that the £4 I paid to park in the city centre on Saturday was well worth it to not have to go to Meadowhall. Near to Coles, great shops on Division Street,Fargate and Orchard Square, the salvation Army band and a great pub lunch. All made christmas shopping a pleasure rather than a chore in the souless hell that is Meadowhall. There is also an evening offer on weekdays after 6pm when the price is reduced to £2.50.  At Malin Bridge you pay £1 for parking then the normal tram ticket (£3 return as far as University or £4 Dayrider into town proper).  At Valley Centertainment and Meadowhall Interchange it is free parking then £4 on the tram for a Dayrider. I'll stick to my original post on this thread . I'll never park in a NCP car park in town ever again , because I refuse to pay extorunate fee's. Yes I could park for free down near Bramall Lane, or the likes. But once again it's to much hassle for me to walk all that way laiden with shopping bags. I've decided all the shops I need are under one roof , with free parking at Meadowhall . If I'm going for a drink , or something to eat in town that's a different matter. taxie everytime. tintin123 Â Â 10 #54 Posted December 23, 2014 a bit of free parking won't significantly change that, if you want to improve the city centre turn off the internet and close out of town places like crystal peaks and meadowhall. You can't really count Crystal Peaks as an out of town shopping centre. It is primarily the shopping centre for the local area (Mosborough Townships) and before it was built there was nothing in the vicinity of the newly built estates. It is the modern equivalent of the shopping streets of Hillsborough, Broomhill or Woodseats. I doubt you recommend closing the shops there. Planner1   442 #59 Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) There was a perfectly good car park at Kelham Island, the council refused to renew the lease to the service provider as the land was being developed about a year ago.........nothings happened since except for the fact that the number of parking wardens have increased in the area. Sums up the councils attitude/policies in a nutshell.  That is not my understanding of what happened.  The operators of that car park had planning consent for a temporary car park. The Council would normally only allow a car park to operate as a temporary one for a couple of years. My understanding is that one had been around for maybe 7 years or so.  When the operator applied for renewal of their temporary planning consent, they were told that it had been "temporary" for long enough and they either needed to bring it up to the standard required to gain planning consent for a permanent car park (ie proper surfacing, lighting etc ) or close it. They decided to close it, as it was about to be redeveloped for housing etc anyway.  The Council do not own that land as far as I am aware.  Ther are various Council car parks in that vicinity which charge only £2 per day and other private sector operators too, so there are alternatives available.  ---------- Post added 23-12-2014 at 12:30 ----------  5 of us recently went to a panto in Sheffield for the evening and parked in the Q car park, had to take 2 cars for a couple of complicated reasons (disability, working in different places beforehand etc). I didn't mind paying the show ticket prices which added to a fair amount for us as it was, but parking the cars cost £20 for the evening!  It's been a long while since I was in Sheffield center... and it's going to be a long while before I'm back in there again!  And if you arrived after 4.30pm, you could have parked in a nearby Council on street bay for a flat fee of £2 for the whole period til 8.30pm when charging ends. Same in off street car parks for £1 flat fee. Edited December 23, 2014 by Planner1
 Share this content via...
