Pay and display machine in Millhouses Park

Recommended Posts

The key argument is: Why charge to use the car park when you can park free on the road ? Forcing people to park on the road increases the chances of death or serious injury.

Dont give them ideas for gods sake, they'll put pay machines there now!

If street parking around children isn't dangerous why are they putting double yellows outside schools.

Keeping school entrances clear is a rather different issue to insinuating that children are not safe wherever there is a road with a car parked on it.

People are killed and injured every year by drivers manoeuvring in car parks and driveways. Car usage brings risks.

The discussion is specifically about Millhouses park where naturally there will be a concentration of children, especially at the weekend, so if its ok to park on the road right outside millhouses park, why not schools?

By the same logic, do you think it's ok to blow up the Town Hall just because they send you a Council Tax demand? Will you be sending a bomb to Downing St because they cut Council budgets and obliged them to raise more income?

Your posts are becoming ever more pathetic in you futile attempt to justify these charges.

As was said before, parking meters on town streets are a good idea as they do a service to the public by controling parking. Parking meters in parks merely get people's backs up by making unnecessary charges for the sake of making money. They cannot be justified and as a result will probably wind up as a target. How you think that in any way suggests condoning attacks on the Town Hall or Downing Street is down to your desperate attempts to defend th indefensible.

Your most pathetic reply yet, and that's saying something.

Whenever we talk about permit parking schemes on here, it's always said (particularly by Planner1) that the whole idea isn't to make money for the council but simply to deter people from parking there. So what's the rationale this time bearing in mind that they don't really want to be seen to be deterring people from going to the park? Why, yes, it's... making money!

Maybe it's about time you came clean about those other parking permit schemes now, eh?

Do you think that raising revenue to maintain services is a bad thing?

Should the Council not charge (other than via Council Tax ) for anything and just deliver less services?

Depends how they do it I suppose. I'd like to see them collect all the council tax and rent arrears before they start charging extra for things like this.

Depends how you raise the money. Penalising families on a trip to the park is unethical in my opinion. You can't get a much more family-oriented day out. Fresh air, quality fun family time. Something that, until now, was considered a free alternative for all those people who just want to 'be'.

Oh, yes, let's collar them with a charge and ruin their day. Lovely!

And, you look on any parking-related website, and all you find are things written about the danger of children around parked cars on the street. Moving cars unable to see them.

Well, SCC are doing a damn good job at making people stay at home. Well done!

I'm boycotting Millhouses Park henceforth. Shame. All that money spent on doing it up, and making it nice.

Do they charge for park car parks in the north of Sheffield, Planner1? Or do the Labour Councillors live up there?

I'm not trying to justify anything. I'm pointing out the flaws in your arguments.

Councils everywhere are looking at ways of increasing their income because of government funding cuts. If you accept that in order to maintain service levels, service users will have to contribute to the costs, charging motorists a modest amount use a car park does not seem unreasonable to me.

Councillors everywhere are having to make very difficult decisions on whether to charge for services or reduce service levels. There isn't enough money to carry on as before, so something has to change. These cuts are continuing year on year, so things are not going to get better anytime soon.

There are many ways to save the money, but all impact on people in some way and they will have a view on it.

Have you expressed your views on this to your elected representatives?

Well they will be doing soon because Hillsborough Park is one of the ones to get parking charges. Be interesting to see whether those same charges apply on match days when the car park is used exclusively by Wednesday fans.

Of course Hillsborough has a bit of a history of voting LibDem so they need to be punished too...

Well there's a shock since it was your job to do exactly that.
