  1. It made you realise just how good the London Opening Ceremony was. I know the French have been worried about things in the river but tonight showed a lot of it on the river.
  2. It's tonight (and next Sunday) according to the BBC website.
  3. Many years ago, before the Yorkshire Penny Bank took it over, the site was occupied by the Albany Temperance Hotel.
  4. I've not reads the whole of this thread, so I hope I'm not duplicating something already said. If it's possible to walk into a gun shop and come out with a high powered rifle capable of hitting a target X metres away, then surely that should be the minimum radius of security. The most powerful weapon 's range should determine the security zone. A few years ago I bought the Sam Bourne paperback "To Kill the President" - almost a manual for assassins.
  5. July 5th 1902 was the start of a sporting event in Sheffield. It was the first (of three!) days of a cricket Test match between England and Australia at Bramall Lane. Bramall Lane is one of two venues in the country to have hosted an FA Cup Final and a Test Match. It was in the next couple of years that Yorkshire Cricket Club moved north to Leeds and so that ground became the HQ of Yorkshire Cricket with a few crumbs tossed our way with matches at Bramall Lane (until the decision was taken to convert to a football stadium) and later at Abbeydale. Australia won by 143 runs, by the way.
  6. There's a report of it being on the agenda for a Council meeting next Tuesday.
  7. Today is July 1st, the anniversary of the first day of the Somme slaughter in 1916. Pause for a moment to remember those who gave their today for our tomorrow. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
  8. I'm not going to name names regarding those teachers I remember, but one thing that struck me was how the old teachers in the 1960s, those females approaching retirement age seemed so much older than 60. As one who will never see 60 again, they looked a lot older than I feel today. I suppose this could be explained by the fact they lived through two World Wars, possibly losing people dear to them.
  9. Part of the problem is the higher energy costs, add to that the recent break in and vandalism. together with a less than sparkling season. But the pies are good.
  10. Stolen watches are nothing to do with the plight of Stocksbridge Park Steels.
  11. I don't think that's known as yet. Initially an office will be needed. This could be anywhere. When the company moves to Sheffield, then I would imagine an industrial unit would make a suitable base with room for rehearsal space, costume making and set construction. At this point somewhere with office space would be needed. There would be no need for audience room. Only some space big enough to hold the stage and the orchestra, with dressing rooms for performers.
  12. I suppose during the intervals a guitarist might come on and play "Recuerdos de la Hallambra" Other operas might include: The Haunted Manor La purpura de la ponderosa Einstein on the Beauchief
  13. I've been thinking about what Sheffield Operas could be created and come up with: Otello, The Moor River Don Giovanni Un Ballo in Mosborough Cosi Fan Totley Any more ideas?
  14. Working with schools is going to be a great way to encourage new audiences and I would hope there is some input into the organisation from local creatives. A pity that this comes on the back of a dreadful production of Manon Lescaut - see the Guardian reviews.
  15. I've used the bank in the past to pay in money. I don't imagine those notes are still there in the cellar, so how did Securicor or similar manage to take them away
  16. There's nothing in this post to say that the said kangaroo was bought at meadowhall.
  17. There are currently three tiers of membership. The first in free, which gives you an online certificate, newsletters and entry to the monthly prize draw (plus 10% discount on online purchases in the shop). The two higher tiers are both subscription based. More details at https://sheffieldfc.com/become-a-member
  18. If the FA really bothered about the little clubs, they would not have ruled for next season: So for some little clubs, the FA Cup will not be in their fixture list next season.
  19. The coin is manufactured by Zenith Coins and will be available for only one week.
  20. I suppose for a treat one could always let the goldfish have a turn swimming in the bath, but you'd have to take the coal out first/.. And if you've been taken in by the "If it's safe in water, it's safe in Lux" hype. It's the spin dryer that kills them.
  21. The shop was impulse. At the corner used to be the Albert Pub, (The Cole Brothers building was built on the site of the Albert Hall which burnt down in the 1930s). Just up Division Street was a former car showroom which became a burger restaurant opened by the brothers(?) who had the Chuck Ranch at Hillsborough.
  22. Could you have gone up the steps by Bacon Lane and then to the Woodbourne Hotel?
  23. I don't know if it will be mentioned in Mike Higginbottom's brilliant talk "Demolished Sheffield" next Monday 11th March at the Upper Wincobank Chapel, Wincobank Avenue S5 6BB (bus route 95/95A) .6-30 for 7pm.
  24. Hallam set a new record in the FA Vase the other week.
