  1. Well done Drinkingman, and a special thank you to your wife, very interesting.
  2. I got married in 1970 and my first t.v. was rented from BRW. I seem to think that we had it for a few years. As well as having it's own outside broadcast service (which I was actually on at one time) you could also receive Central T.V. from the midlands. Nothing special you might think but at the time it was wonderful to receive another channel. Most of the programmes were the same as Yorkshire T.V. but occasionally there was a different film to choose from and there was also a different sports programme at the weekend.
  3. It will take less than half an hour from Hillsborough.
  4. Hi There, You could also catch a no. 1 or no. 2 from Hillsborough Interchange. This goes from Hillsborough through longley, Sheffield lane top and then on to concord park.
  5. I used to be a member of the club in the 70's and early 80's. The steward at the time was called Walter. One of the committee was called Ernest Witham, or Pino to his friends. I think the secretary or president was called Walt Goodison. It was a lovely little club, very freindly people. I went on the annual kids club trip a couple of times with my eldest daughter. That would be about 1978/9. I think the club is still open, although I may be wrong.
  6. Try contacting Dr Joan Unwin, The Archavist, The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. The Cutlers Hall, Church Street, Sheffield S1 . She has access to a wealth of information regarding such matters.
  7. The Chinese restaurant that had singers on at the weekends was the Golden Dragon (just off the moor). When I had my stag night (1970) we ended up in the Dragon and Tony White was on that night. When he found out that I was getting married the next day he took the p--s out of me all night.
  8. Sorry about the spelling mistake on the last thread.
  9. Just heard on the news. Lee Hughes is elgible for parole in June/July this year. Olham Athletic have offered him a contract if he gets out.( Heard this on Sky Sports About an hour ago).
  10. I've still got my old metal bin. I use it to store all my spare plant pots and other small garden items in.
  11. I remember her. She appeared a my local w.m.c. many times. Not my cup of tea but she was popular.
  12. One of my favourite old Sheffield sayings is :-Don't thee tha' me, thee tha' thissen and see ar' tha' likes it. Which was said to people when they started using the words tee and tha' to someone in conversation.
  13. Anyone who is thinking buying cutlery/knives etc. which they are told is "Made in Sheffield". Be very aware that there is quite a bit of dodgy stuff being touted around, on ebay and other auction sites, which is definitely not "Made in Sheffield". You can usually tell from a quick glance if it is the real stuff or not.
  14. Aybody wanting a copy of "Mesters to Masters" can obtain one from The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire at the Cutlers Hall, Church Street ,Sheffield S1 1HG. It will probably cost you a tenner.
  15. Vulcan road is still there. It is one of the roads that leads into "Meadowhell". When the firm was known as Dunford Hadfields, they took over Brown Bayley's which was situated on Worksop Road,Attercliffe. When they eventually closed down in 1981 the works were demolished and it is now the site of Don Valley Stadium. I worked there from 1966 to 1980.
  16. A few years ago, there were seven pubs in the wicker (arches to ladies bridge) and only one fast food shop (this was a chip shop). Now there is only one pub (big gun) and loads and loads of fast food shops/take aways. Sign of the times.
  17. Hi There Andy, I have just joined the forum and yours is one of the first items I have read. I worked at Brown Bayley's from 1966 to 1981, which was just around the corner from Attercliffe baths and across the road from the library. I used to use the swimming baths on a regular basis and I have read many books from the library. The library was built in 1894 and had an internal refurbishment in 1927. The Baths building is still there (a listed building I believe) and is used as offices. If you require any more info why not contact the Central library on Surrey Street in Sheffield. Their archive dept will have all the info. Also there are a couple of books which will be of interest. They are A WANDER UP THE CLIFFE and A FURTHER WANDER UP THE CLIFFE>(sorry I can't remember the author. I hope this is of use to you. Rod.
