Worldwide, fertility has fallen from an average of 5 births per woman in 1950 to 2.3 births per woman in 2021, an indication of the increasing control that individuals – particularly women – are able to exercise over their reproductive lives.

A birthrate of 2.1 is required to replace the existing population, many 'rich' countries have a birthrate that is less than 2.1

The UKs birthrate is 1.6 which is great if we want a lower birthrate, but do we?

A lower birthrate is great for climate change, but poor countries are still at birthrates above 3

Are we taking control of our reproduction, or is our health and lifestyle working against humanity?

The 'rich countries' are not so rich anymore, the money is all going to the top 1%.

With poverty increasing at the bottom and working it's way up the social groups, is it surprising women are not having so many children?

Generally speaking the more the standard of living increases and the wealthier a country becomes the more the birth rate decreases.

The answer to overpopulation and illegal immigration is to find a way to help poorer nations prosper. One way of going about that would be to stop giving financial aid, which tends to have an unfortunate habit of mysteriously ending up in some despots Swiss bank account.

Aid should be given by providing support and expertise in building hospitals, schools, water supplies and anything else which directly contributes to the welfare of the population.

Provide people with a way of making a living and having a decent life and far fewer will want to leave their homeland, and its been shown that  less children tend be born in those circumstances.

The fertility rate figures really do indicate that the better off people are, the better choices they make, don't they? It's not much of a leap to surmise that this applies to behaviour other than how many children people have, such as how much they engage in criminal and antisocial behaviour.

The problem with that of course is the difference between the haves and have nots in a country. Wealth inequality is a contributor toward civic unrest and crime rates.

America has a high crime rate and 66.6% of the countries wealth is owned by 10% of earners while the lowest 50% of earners own only  2.6% of the county's wealth.

The US has one of the highest prison populations in the world.

In the UK the richest 50 families own more wealth than half of the UK population. The UK has the third highest prison population in Europe after Russia and Turkey.

Both welfare and equality are important in attempting to balance things out.

Agree, but unless there is also a reasonable living standard people will tend to have children as an insurance against being left at the mercy of the state in old age.

It doesn't matter if the birthrates are falling....

People are living longer and 9 billion people still produce a lot of children.

The population of the planet will continue to snowball to unsustainable levels
