[/color]if you really want a fun roundabout have a run down to Swindon...

they have one (or they used to) where every lane onto the roundabout was a mini roundabout itself... oddly called, The Magic Roundabout

close your eyes & floor it

That was tried at Brook Hill.....for a very short test period.

In effect you could come down from Walkley and turn right round a mini roundabout to Western Bank without passing another junction.

Interesting but abandoned.

Although not really a problem with the roundabouts themselves, more how they're being used.

1 Coming off the roundabout on St Mary's Rd, at the end of Bramall Lane, and ultimately intending to go on Ecclesall Rd. If you start in the left hand lane as you pass Bramall Lane, then this lane widens to double width (the left half then filtering towards London Rd) and the right half then becoming the left hand lane approach to Ecclesall Rd. So no need to change lane.

2. The other one is when coming down Upper Hanover Street with the intention of being in the left hand lane on Ecclesall Rd to then turn onto Summerfield Street. If you approach the roundabout in the middle lane (of the three), you can stay in lane and come off onto the left lane (for Waitrose, the Wards complex or Summerfield Street) without having to change lane.

In both these cases the routes described avoid any need to change lane later. Of course there's nothing wrong with using a lane over to the right and then changing lanes, ie straightening the roundabout out a bit, if traffic levels permit, as long as you change lanes safely. But there are plenty of drivers who don't chack to their left as they exit and are surprised to find someone already occupying the lane to their left.

There is a similar one in Hemel Hempstead that i used to use on driving assessments for prospective new staff. If they got it right it showed common sense and went a long way towards getting them the job. If they got it wrong they definitely failed the application.

Indeed. The traffic flow is unbalanced as well which doenst help if you are on one of the lesser used streets like Bolsover Street trying to get into the roundabout.

However - I can't beleive no ones mentioned hole-in-t'road yet. That could be a bit of a mare too - till they filled it all in.
