Whats the worst roundabout In Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Nobody is forcing you to cycle round a dangerous roundabout though are they? You have the option to dismount and pretend you're a pedestrian who use the proper traffic controlled crossings. If people driving cars complain about how bad those roundabouts are I only imagine how many times worse it could be on a bike.

Until the the recent changes to the road layout, this had been the cycle path to by-pass the roundabout on Brook Hill (thanks to Warrington Cycle Campaign’s facility of the month). There since the tram was installed until last year’s road works.

End of the parkway on the Rotherham side. The lane markings are completely wrong to go from the parkway to Rotherham. If you stay in the lane marked "Roth" you end up on the M1 and have to cross over or start in the wrong lane and expect people to cross across

Centre lane is marked Rhm.

That becomes the left lane on the roundabout after the first exit (M1 N).

That first lane continues around and exits onto the A630 towards Rotherham.

Nothing wrong with the markings at all.

<Enters pedant mode>

Park Square is not actually a roundabout - it is not governed by roundabout rules. It is a series of traffic light controlled junctions that just happened to be laid out to roughly form a circle. Same applies to the “roundabouts” at each end of the Tinsley Viaduct.

...for now>

It's a roundabout that happens to have traffic lights on it. If the lights were disabled (power cut) then roundabout rules would apply to it.

The map labels it as Parksquare Roundabout

I suspect that the council call it the same thing.

My mistake its the junction on the roundabout before the parkway exit. Left lane marked M1 takes you on first M1 lane, Centre lane marked M1 takes you on M1 second lane or feed into lane marked Roth. Right hand lane marked Roth which feeds you into the middle lane marked M1S. You have to cut lane or go across the hatchings at th Roth exit

I use this junction regularly, firstly the Left hand lane is marked M1N. the centre lane is marked Rotherham and M1S and the third lane is only marked M1S.

I do not understand why you are having difficulties although based on your observational skills.......................

No. Once power goes off, then all bets are off, unless there are other signs specifically instructing what to do, as there are, for example, at the lights where derek Dooley way (I think) joints the Parkway, near the Capita building.

If the lights fail at Parksquare roundabout, you are left with no give way (single dash) lines on entry to the roundabout, so where do you give way? You still have the single stop line across the carriageway, across both the incoming lanes and those already on the roundabout. If someone already on the roundabout decides that they automatically have right of way and sail through the stop line on the road, in the expectation that the person entering the roundabout would give way, and is then in an accident with someone entering the roundabout, they will be on a sticky wicket claiming right of way. Both drivers would be at fault, particularly as both had crossed a stop line and clearly had not determined that it was safe to proceed.

Some roundabouts have temporary lights to cope with busy times, and to hold back some traffic, but they still include all the necessary markings for a roundabout for when the lights are not in use.

And yes, I’m using the word roundabout, as a shorthand. But it isn’t, as the way described in the Highway Code.
