2015- July Budget

Budget speech: Agreed with some of it, disagreed with some of it, didn't understand some of it. But seemed fairly radical to me.

Waiting for the commentators and pundits to explain what it all means in real terms...

Thought you's be in favour Anna - disabled, elderly and vulnerable protected from cuts; more money for the NHS; those who want to work getting a new National Living Wage... Paid for by cutting benefits for those who don't, those who want to have more than 2 children, and tackling tax avoidance of so called non-doms and people that pay themselves dividends.

That's it in a nutshell. Of course there is more - but say which bits you don't get and I'm sure people will fill you in - so to speak.

This bit is concerning me:

Major reform to vehicle excise duties to pay for a new road-building and maintenance fund in England

New VED bands for new cars to be introduced from 2017, pegged to emissions - 95% of car owners will pay £140 a year

If you're going to pay for a new road building and maintenance fund but claim that most will pay £140 a year it doesn't add up - unless some who have previously been paying less will now pay that. And that other 5% will pay much much more.

Mostly the business stuff (not surprisingly) - corporation tax etc. I assume the reduction is to help create more jobs, but don't know if it will 'cos I'm not a business person. Of course, I hope they do. Also hope the measures to ensure tax collection, non-dom stuff etc have the teeth to work.

Pleased to hear about living wage, hope that will compensate people losing out on tax credits. Agree with limiting child allowance to 2. Still don't understand 'Northern Power House' to be honest...

Assuming 20 million cars that's almost £3 billion a year then you add in the trucks and buses.....

That's pretty much exactly what it means. There are a lot of low emission cars on the road that fall within lower, or even zero tax bracket at the moment, and that is forecast to be as high as 35% in the next few years. So Gideon has changed it to make only zero emission cars pay zero tax. Everyone else will pay either a standard tax rate of £140 per year, or a higher rate, which he didn't disclose. I'm guessing the latter will only apply to serious gas guzzlers.

I'm just looking in the link that InigoMontoya posted on another thread:

Does this mean that the £20 a year road tax (or even £0) will be over from 2017?

I've always been amazed that I can buy a new big Mondeo estate and pay no road tax on it.

Check out that first year's £2000 road tax though! Will this kill new ownership, with people preferring to wait a year? Or will those who can afford such guzzlers not care?

I am sure there is lots in the budget that people will not agree with but two points I do agree with and the reasons why.

1. Limiting child benefit to 2 children. I had two children the youngest now being 15. That was because I could afford to raise two, the only benefits I have ever had was child benefit. I used to get pi@@ed off seeing relatives, neighbours who were on benefits with loads of kids, better car than me, new TV etc. I was paying for them through my taxes, was I annoyed, you bet. Now young girls will think twice before getting pregnant to some Jeremy Kyle candidate knowing that the taxpayer will no longer fund numerous kids. It will deter people coming here for benefits,it will limit the number of kids in the EU that we support. Love this change. Any wanting more kids better get breeding before 2017.

2. Limiting benefits to 20k again in favour seeing as I only earn 18800, so I am still below that limit. Again young girls will think twice before getting pregnant, people will no longer get a good living out of the tax payer. Ordinary working young people work hard and cannot afford a house but some feckless breeder can get a council house because they could not figure out to use a condom. All of you know people who have had a damn good living, through benefits, a living that was better than yours so you have to be in favour of at least these two point because I am. Socialists tree hungers who think the state should pay for everything, over to you.

Tax credits and Universal Credit to be restricted to two children, affecting those born after April 2017.

Why not 9 months from now...........Why do these changes come into place from 2017?

There will be a huge baby boom from now till then with scroungers trying to knock 3 kids before the deadline.

Yep - but only for new cars. Doesn't apply to one you already own. Which is just as well as I have recently bought a car on the basis it attracts no tax...
