MikeFrank   10 #25 Posted May 18, 2015 Its about the numbers. Nobody in power seems to understand this. Next year there will be another 300,000 competing for public services and the same the year after... it will all end in tears... RonJeremy   10 #26 Posted May 18, 2015 The natives need to stop firing blanks then don't they! I don't fire blanks. But when I'd had as many kids as I could afford, I started firing my live rounds at something other than a live target. There are plenty of other places to shoot than the bullseye
 Share this content via...

cgksheff   44 #28 Posted May 19, 2015 Have you any evidence that immigrants have a higher birth rate, or are you just assuming that they do?  There is plenty of easily accessed evidence to clarify such claims.  There are several ethnic groups that have Total Fertility Rates that are higher than the national average. Somewhat surprisingly, the group that is way ahead than anyone else is from the Orthodox Jews.
 Share this content via...
emmagrace   10 #29 Posted May 19, 2015 We actually need the immigrants and children because in a few years we are facing a lot of challenges caused by our ageing society. We need people to work and pay in our welfare system otherwise we won't be able to receive pensions anymore or health care.
 Share this content via...
Berberis   10 #30 Posted May 19, 2015 How do countries with bigger populations than us cope?  There is only one country in the EU with a population density greater than the UK and that is Belgium, but as their population is so small compared, you cannot compare the two. One thing we need to do is raise the % of land we build on. Currently its 10% while countries like Germany is 13-15%. This is why housing is so expensive in the UK compared to contemporaries like Germany.  ---------- Post added 19-05-2015 at 12:08 ----------  We actually need the immigrants and children because in a few years we are facing a lot of challenges caused by our ageing society. Most tax payers dont even pay for their own public services. You need to earn £35,000 and pay tax on that just to break even. ,most taxes come from the richest 5%.. Berberis   10 #34 Posted May 19, 2015 The population does need to be increased to solve that problem, increasing the productivity of the current population will solve it without causing an even bigger problem in the future.  Increase the productivity of the north and South West and the country will be fine. The gap is huge, in Central London the average worker is producing 42% more every hour than the national average. Cornwall produces 28% less than the national average.  ---------- Post added 19-05-2015 at 12:28 ----------  So rich immigrants will help to solve the problems we face and poor low skilled low waged immigrants will make the situation worse than it already is.  Well, statistically speaking, low skilled workers from outside of the EU cost the UK more than they contribute by way of taxation compared to the benefits/services they receive. Harrystottle   10 #35 Posted May 19, 2015 (edited) Capitalism loves a big population, the bigger the better.  All things being equal a population of 80 million people will eat more food, buy more cars, consume more gas and electricity, need more housing, clothing, etc etc than a population of 40 million.  So big business loves a rapidly increasing population; more consumption = more profits.  Politicians also love it but don't like to admit it. A bigger population means more consumption means more "economic growth" which is the only thing that seems to matter to our MP's.  So big business loves immigration; politicians love immigration. So it doesn't really matter what the people think, one way or the other.  More fields going under concrete? More competition for jobs that pay a pittance? More road congestion? Harder and harder to get a doctor's appointment, or to get your kids into the school of your choice?  Get used to it, because it's not going to stop anytime soon.  Although with predictions that in the near future 47% of current jobs will be automated, the short termism of deliberately growing the population at a rapid rate will become pretty obvious. emmagrace   10 #36 Posted May 19, 2015 The population doesn't need to be increased to solve that problem, increasing the productivity of the current population will solve it without causing an even bigger problem in the future.  How is there even the possibility to increase the productivity if there will be a lack of people able to work. I do agree, our tax system is not perfect and it definitely needs to be modified in the next years, but what we need to do is to make sure that these immigrants are able to get well paid work in order to help public finances and pay for OUR pensions and health care system. Otherwise, it means that there will need to be an extra £19billion of spending cuts or tax rises after 2019. An OBR analysis suggests that Britain's borrowing as a propotion of GDP would rise to 99 per cent if there is a steady flow of immigrants. If there was a complete ban on immigrants, borrowing would rise to 174 per cent of GDP.
 Share this content via...
