The Decline Of Sheffield City Centre

Recommended Posts

One of the earlier posts makes mention of the inhospitable access to add to that , just one query. If I travel from Charter Row/Grosvenor square on to Furnival gate. I am forced to turn left on to Pinstone street, then left onto Cambridge Street Charles street back on to Pinstone street back to Furnival Gate to turn left onto Furnival Square.

Can anyone tell me Why I have to do this ? (please no comments like "cos the signs say so" ) I mean the reasoning for it.

If that's not inhospitable bordering on obstructive I don't know what is.

Then The matrix -waste of time and energy- signs tell me to "drive less" (oh and while I am at get shut of my diesel car that does more MPG than the petrol version:huh::huh: Or tell me not to drink and drive or that school holidays are ending No $h1^ Sherlock ) I digress.

I spend minutes driving around an area I don't want to be adding to congestion, and then told to drive less:loopy::loopy::loopy:

Yes its inhospitable.

Much as I think Meadowhall should be renamed Meadowhell, and I hate it with a passion, if I have to go shopping I would sooner drive there unhindered by bizarre traffic rules and regulations , park for free, and not get molested by beggars, survey monkeys, or socialist workers and stay warm to boot.

R.I.P Sheffield City Centre it was nice knowing ya !.

Can I just say something nice about Sheffield City Centre.

I was looking for a present for Mother's Day, & I was in Atkinsons was struggling for inspiration. The Shop Assistants there were very helpful and helped me narrow down my choices to perfumes and toiletries and they even helped me narrow the choices of perfumes. In the end I chose Yardley's Royal English Daisy Eau De Toilette & matching Luxury Body Wash. A bargain as they were reduced.

My Mum really liked the present.

You need a doctorate from the University of Goggldegook to be able to find a way into the car park underneath the Grosvenor Hotel.

There are dozens of decent restaurants and excellent pubs in the city centre...

Some folks have higher standards than that. The only decent restaurants open when the shoppers have gone home.

I can only assume that you haven't ever been to the city centre, with a stupid statement like that.

Well if you were to walk from Man Power Services to the end of Fargate (around a mile) which of the pubs would you pop in for a pint of Jaipur and a rump steak.

It's to deter through traffic in the city centre. They would prefer it if you went round the ring road.

So, what "bizarre" traffic rules and regulations are these?

At Meadowhall, you drive around a ring road to get to the part you want to visit, just like in the city centre.

At Meadowhall, you can only drive into one parking area and have to go back out onto the ring road if you want to get to another part, just like in the city centre

At Meadowhall, you can't drive down the main shopping streets because they are pedestrianized, just like in the city centre.

And the pedestrianised bits are under cover.

I thought the problem was that folk went round the ring road and spent there money elsewhere. Didn't anyone tell you the idea is to bring folk into the city centre to spend there money?

I blame Waltheof's planners for not allowing for the motor car and parking requirements thereof; as Hallam began to develop around the 11th century

That's the main shopping stretch, I'd be interested to know how many cities have pubs on the main shopping stretch. If we're sticking religiously to that I'd head to Brown's at St Paul's but since we're all adults here the best pub grub in Sheffield city centre is at Rutland Arms on Brown Street and not far off the main stretch in fact it's perfectly placed for the bus or train station since you've been drinking.

Good job because all there is there are Shop and a few chain restaurants. People have no other reason for being there other than to shop. Its a shopping centre.

Any guesses why you cannot park for free in the centre of a major city??

Jesus, how many more times is this crap going to come up. The city centre (any city centre) is far far more than just what shopping facilities it has.
