Having never watched the film (with Jack and Rose) I haven't got anything 'Titanic' to really compare it to. Seemed to me that The Poseidon Adventure was better and that isn't saying much is it?!! It may well be rubbish, and I won't be watching, but I read an article in the FT describing how it had sold very well overseas and the programme was well in profit before an episode had been seen. Cameron's Titanic (now in 3D this week) is surely the definitive version, unless it's focusing more on the characters than the actual special FX of the sinking.
