Football clubs pay to prevent trouble being caused by their supporters. In the case of the Lib Dems, their supporters are not the problem. So not comparable.

 

Not comparable when 83,131 Lib Dem supporters in Sheffield voted for their candidates in last years election? The Lib Dems pay the £2m out of the party's own coffers.

So how come the article says:

 

"The cost, borne by the police, comes as the force tries to make £15m of savings."

 

have the Beeb got it wrong?

It's still rather unlikely to be the Lib Dem supporters who cause trouble (if there is any) however many there are of them. This is why it's not comparable to a football team where you pay to cover the potential trouble caused by your own supporters...
