So whats your alternative then! Hight rise city sky lines look fantasic, simple as!

Sheffield is too elongated....from Moorfoot down to Waingate, to be all high-rise. Just my opinion of course but there was the opportunity to develop the south side of the Moor along the lines of a country market town shopping facility. Small independen/specialist shops, local fresh produce outlets etc. with reasonable rents and perhaps even some initial financial incentive to attract the right kind of trader. A decent sized band-stand in the centre to provide occasional entertainment with a nearby bistro or two with tables outside. In fact an altenative to the 'same-old' dept. store shoopping experience and a contrast to the surrounding high-rise.

I bet you are willing that on to happen aren't you?

No - it would cost the council dear in lost revenue - but I do think the council are a bit foolhardy in putting all their eggs in the apartment-block basket. A high-rise sky-line might look well but if some of the buildings are half-empty it won't feel very well. Without the full rental income owners tend to let their buildings go to seed.

I agree that we should have a big (twisted?) spire to replace the Tinsley towers. I think it would be better as a landmark for the Advanced Manufacturing Park. People would be able to see it from all around (including the M1) and it would encourage them into the city as opposed to just passing it by and thinking 'oh that's nice'.

Anyway, that's my idea.

It's not student accomodation. No shops either i'm afraid. The complex is a lot of office space with some normal flats on top.

But yeah, it's the bigger of the two that this thread is about.

Fair enough if you think that would be good, but it sounds absolutely terrible to me. :dunno:

It's not just apartments being built. Sheffield's development so far and in the future is pretty well spread between apartments, office and retail/restaurants etc.

Nice to see we can agree on something Paulmat, but to put something that large near to lots of new housing at the AMP would, I feel be out of scale.

The reason a structure of this size would work on the Tinsley Towers site is because every other structure in that area is of a similar scale (Meadowhall, Tinsley Viaduct, Outukompu Steel, Magna etc) so even though this building is tall you have the perfect combination of similar scale buildings surrounding it but no high rise competition to detract from it's beauty. Perfect.

I'm not so sure. The fact that it'd be completely out of scale in the AMP would work well I think. (Can't agree for too long, can we! ;))

Of course not Paulmat and I don't believe you for one minute.

To suggest that out of scale buildings work better together than buildings of a similar scale is exactly like saying that out of tune music sounds better than music that's in tune. Of course it doesn't and nobody in their right mind would agree that it does unless of course they're engineering an out of tune musical instrument that they're trying to sell as a finely tuned instrument to somebody who's tone deaf. Know what I mean Paulmat?
