  1. Hi, Wanting to replace some vertical blinds on a large (3m+ X 2m+) window. Any recommendations for a decent local business who can sort please? Although existing blinds are vertical I'm not beholden to that style; Venetian, Plantation style shutters etc could be an option. Has someone used a south Sheff business of late that they could recommend on price and quality please?
  2. Totally agree with you on this Andy. When the traffic backs up on the Greenhill Parkway in the morning lots of cars come down Gervase Road to turn left onto Lowedges Rd and join Meadowhead roundabout a junction earlier and therefore quicker. With parked cars on Gervase the bus can't get through when there's a stream of traffic coming in the opposite direction. I've been on a 25 that has taken well over 25 mins just to get from the Old Mother Redcap to the St Peters Church roundabout! My other main gripe with the re-routing of this service is why on earth go Queens Road & St Mary's Road. Witnessing this at first hand every day as I do, I note that (i) there are very few passengers getting on / off on Queens Rd and (ii) there are no bus stops at all on St Mary's Road! Compare that with the numbers who got on/off the service when it was routed into town more directly down London Road. And yes I have raised these points through the official channels but I'm not going to stake any money on them being taken notice of.
  3. Not disagreeing with you for one minute Andy, but I'm interested, did you eat at The Castle when the previous couple came in after Craig left last year? I for one went several times in the run up to the New Year and for food it was doing quite well - more folks eating than I've ever seen. The food standard was excellent, presentation better than many restaurants and portions really good too. But the prices were a world apart, i.e. started off two courses from £6/£8/£10 and their Sunday dinners were just out of this world. I think they've now gone to the Rising Sun, Fulwood if I'm not mistaken and I'm planning a trip up there very soon. So, all in all, a very hard act to follow and I just can't help thinking how paying 2-3 times as much in the same venue would give me a meal any better...but being local I will give it a try and wish the new owners all the best.
  4. Have you considered the top of Meersbrook Park? Seems to tick the boxes you have mentioned. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=view+from+top+of+meersbrook+park&tbm=isch&imgil=DdrbpYxB0SCKHM%253A%253BHOSE7MXmcgcu6M%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fsheffieldtimewalk.wordpress.com%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=DdrbpYxB0SCKHM%253A%252CHOSE7MXmcgcu6M%252C_&biw=1536&bih=764&usg=__lBMAw1-6CLgBus8Q0RcS20zZiNE%3D&ved=0ahUKEwj4rNq1t5PKAhWBJBoKHetbCBwQyjcILQ&ei=FB2MVvjSEIHJaOu3oeAB#imgrc=DdrbpYxB0SCKHM%3A&usg=__lBMAw1-6CLgBus8Q0RcS20zZiNE%3D ---------- Post added 05-01-2016 at 19:51 ---------- Plenty of parking round there. Great for setting tripod and impressive views over the city. https://goo.gl/maps/juhTz8EFU882
  5. Sorry I haven't. But that is because I use the Kolkata just across the road. Must order once a week, portions are good sized, tastes fantastic and no reason to look elsewhere. Ate at the Viraaj and Kashmiri Aroma and to be honest Kolkata takeaways are better tasting than both in my opinion.
  6. I've got to totally disagree here. The Wildlife Trust actually encourage cutting down the woodland / trees on Blackamoor - birch bashing I think is their way of describing this. If wild deer are doing this job why do they need to too? Deer make their own way across the moor avoiding places where others go. Cows trample and follow footpaths and gather at gates leaving steaming pats and mud and basically create an unholy mess. It all goes back to the basic fact that stick cows or sheep up on the moor then that attracts farming subsidies (allegedly). But cows need to be fenced in hence the barbed wire the Wildlife Trust put up around Blacka. And I go up on Blacka very often and have seen at first hand what damage has been done to the true wildlife by being caught on the barbed wire. A wildlife trust with their first thoughts for wildlife? Doesn't come across that way to me. If there's too much damage being done then take the cattle and sheep off, get rid of the barbed wire, stop the birch bashing and poisoning of the fern and let just one tiny corner revert to how nature intended to be. And don't forget that is in complete keeping with J G Graves covenant not some agricultural drive to eek out more funding.
  7. My integral Whirlpool Fridge door won't open other than a couple of inches as the bottom of the two hinges have gone. I googled the model number and it's about £100 for a pair of hinges for it (advice on the website is replace both if one has gone). The website said it is a common failing given the load (4pt milk in door compartment etc.) they carry so need to be heavy duty. Has anyone replaced fridge door hinges recently and how much / where do you recommend? Thanks in advance.
  8. Fred Karno's - yep you got it right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Karno The other similar saying my gran used to come out with is 'it's like Casey's Court'. As a kid I thought it was 'Casey's Coat' (as she pronounced it pronounced coo-hat) but since been told Casey was an judge in Ireland and gave rulings over animal ownership and the animals where often brought into the court. Hence Casey's Court lending itself to describe a messy chaotic situation. Don't know how right that is though. ---------- Post added 31-05-2014 at 16:37 ---------- Well this webpage says I've been misinformed about the origins of Casey's Court http://news.bbc.co.uk/dna/place-lancashire/plain/A28505360 but funnily enough it has links with Fred Karno.
  9. Seconded. Just had fishcake butty and chips from Woodseats Fisheries this dinner. Cracking snap. Fishcake was a big one and had plenty of fish covering the tatty scallops. Quality, quantity and price-wise Woodseats Fisheries is my first choice for chippy dinners despite there being other chippies closer by. Nom Nom. ---------- Post added 31-05-2014 at 16:23 ---------- And a ruby for me tea so delivery from Kolkata, again on Woodseats, another top snap place. Some diet I'm on!

  11. Another recommendation for Jeff the Joiner (Jeff Smith Joiner 07861379796 or 01142203563). Not only did he replace and hang two doors, he removed and put in a custom made banister, which looks fantastic, all in one day. To add to that, I mentioned some of my double glazing units were misted so he used his contacts and sorted those too the very next morning. Top job. Very good work, on time and even slightly under original quote. I would, without a doubt, highly recommend Jeff for anyone wanting any sort of high quality joinery work doing. Only problem is, my missus is that impressed with Jeff's work she's looking at what she wants doing next.
  12. Spurtle and BlackaBlog have it spot on with their posts in this thread and I stand by every word I've posted too. I've no doubt that cosywolf or some other SWT spokesperson will be along soon with some more pre-prepared 'lines to take' cleared by their press & publicity office. But no amount of their propaganda will convince me or others who actually frequent and love the natural beauty of such as Blackamoor that what they are doing is in truly anyway with the interests of wildlife first, second or even at all. And as for consultation.....
  13. But there are acres upon acres of managed moorland all around Blackamoor and beyond. These are maintained and managed that way for the benefit of the agri-shooting fraternity and done so to attract grants / fees for shooting rights. What is so wrong with letting one corner of a place return to what grows and lives there naturally? A truly wild environment does not warrant the 'management' you speak of. Do you prefer cows and barb wire fences? As a further example, not so long ago unsightly power cables ran across Blacka. Did SWT campaign to have these removed? No. This was researched by local users of the Blacka including Blacka Blogger, myself and we were the ones that pressed and got this on the agenda for action. The parts of Blacka that remain untouched by SWTs management are truly the most wonderful spots visually and are frequented by wildlife that is a privilege and honour to witness. I don't know any of the regular visitors to Blacka that don't prefer to see places where mother nature is restoring her glorious natural balance to those with piles of cow excrement, bashed up birch logs, poisoned bracken and yards and yards of barbed wire fencing associated with SWTs management. But of course all this 'management' does attract money though and that's the bottom line for SWT. If SWT were truly for wildlife why would they put cows on the Blacka? Why would they surround the place with barbed wire with all the inherent danger for the true wildlife?
  14. Spurtle, your post is spot on and chimes with my similar experience and views as at post #12 in this thread. Any public consultation with local residents / regular visitors is done under sufferance and not considered because as you say grants are the driver for the trust. Again I would wholeheartedly recommend a read of this blog to see what's happened on Blackamoor under SWT stewardship. http://theblackamoorsite.blogspot.co.uk/ The latest post on the blog actually features Greno Woods.
  15. It's the same near me on Blackamoor. SWT are doing their very best to ruin the place. It was rewilding and with that trees were growing and wild red deer moved back. So what does the 'Wildlife' Trust do but chop down birch, spray the bracken (which provides cover for the young deer) and then to add insult to injury, puts cows on the moor. This led to them putting barbed wire fencing around the site, piles of cow **** everywhere and the cows turning paths into churned up sludge and slurry. Wildlife? No. It's all amount money and the subsidies that having land that is managed (badly) can attract. If you want to know more I recommend this excellent blog and no it's not mine. http://theblackamoorsite.blogspot.co.uk/ If Blackamoor is anything to go by then you've worse to come in Greno Woods at the hands of SWT I'm afraid.
  16. Stefan, whilst I think it's great you've come on the forum to sound things out I can't help thinking that a Flaming Grill chain pub is not going to be the best use of the W&H. As others have said, what would work here is good quality real ales in a pub style setting and, if offering food, then a separate dining area offering high quality freshly cooked food, ideally sourced from local produce. Unfortunately I'm guessing you are going to be tied into selling a restricted range of pubco beers and won't be able to offer any of the ales such as Andy C has listed above which is a real shame. Pubs that can offer such a range are the ones that seem to do well in Sheffield. And there are a number of upmarket restaurants further up Abbeydale Road that do well which goes to show that people are prepared to pay for quality food in the locale. I do agree though with the idea others have mentioned of opening out the rear to have a beer garden / seating area facing onto the park would be a winner.
  17. Try The Castle off 20well Lane. They have live music - usually at weekends, HTH.
  18. I think if anything is found in a black cab the driver is advised to hand it in at Snig Hill Police Station. Could try ringing them on the off chance it's been took in , 0114 219 7219 is the no. I believe.
  19. Thanks for your responses. I called in Thomas's on the way home tonight as its not far from me. They make their own fencing and the quality is far beyond that in the major diy stores so gone withem. Thanks for the tip and you were right - delivery £5 - spot on. ---------- Post added 09-01-2013 at 17:15 ---------- Forgot to add, Steve said he'd pre-drill the panels and throw in the screws too. Recommended!
  20. Hi, Two of my fencing panels have crashed to the ground and I’m looking to replace them. They are bog standard 6 X 6 lap panels. The posts are still secure so it’s only the panels I need. I’ve had a quick look around and the price with big boys like Homebase and B&Q is around £20 per panel but they don’t seem to do home delivery on these. B&Q do but at £25 delivery that’s a hell of a charge on a £20 product. Can anyone recommend a local fencing supplier that would deliver 2 such panels to S17 at a decent price? Erecting them shouldn’t be a problem seeing as the posts are there but if there is only a small charge for that I’d also be willing to pay extra. TIA
  21. Hi, 2 or 3 weeks ago I had my flat roof fail and the rainwater that got in poured through the kitchen ceiling so I need some repairs doing to the plasterboard ceiling, re-plastering the internal wall and repairing the flooring as the water soaked into the chipboard flooring under the tiles. Ideally I like someone out who could the job lot in one swoop (I realise the redecorating would have to wait until the plastering has dried out so will tackle that at a later stage). Thanks.
  22. Hi, Does anyone have a contact number for the complete heat guy? My combi boiler packed in after we had rain get into it from a leaking roof. TIA
  23. Hi, Mom and Dad looking to take the whole extended family (15+ of us) out for a meal to celebrate their wedding anniversary and saw Shiny Sheff at Lodge Moor advertised in the Westside mag. As they want to pay for us all don't want to suggest somewhere too expensive and the Westside advert had buy a main, from £5.95, and get a free starter or dessert so looks to be on the mark price-wise. However haven't eaten there or been in for ages given it's not local to me so before I ring up and book just wondered if anyone had eaten there recently and could offer up any comments as standard of food and what to expect on the menu (couldn't find a Shiny Sheff website to check this out). Thanks in advance.
  24. So....... ..somehow this afternoon I manage to render every single light in the house inoperative and my attempts at fixing fuses in the main board come to naught. Fortunately I still had power to wall sockets and fired up the pc to see who the good folks on Sheff Forum could recommend electrician wise. Dean at DK Electrical got a number of very positive mentions so I gave him a ring late this afternoon. He was here at Bradway just over an hour later and sorted things for me with a minimum of fuss and gave me sound advice how to aviod similar mishaps in the future. I can totally recommend Dean @ DK, and that is is not said lightly as I've not used him before, nor am I related or connected in any other way. Just a top guy that responded immediately and did a great job at a more than fair price. I've already sounded him out for some more (less urgent) electrical work I want doing around my house.
