Hi bothamlad - When you lived in the area, I mentioned 'Goodlad' which you knew of, did you also know a 'Joan Knowles' or her family who I think lived in the same vicinity? Did you or your family frequent the pub around the corner on the hill or the 'Who can tell' up the street from you? Thanks for the info! fleetwood

Did you live near a lad called with the surname 'Goodlad' his first name might have been Kenny. fleetwood

Quince Harmon versus Beach Boys
fleetwood replied to wagginfinger's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I read where Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys purposely replicated the 'Four Freshman' voice Jazz sound and I would say it worked pretty damned good for them and their songs. fleetwood -

Regular visitors to the Golden Dragon
fleetwood replied to mikeh1947's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Hi mikeh1947 - If the Golden Dragon is the restaurant on the left-hand side of the Moor looking down, I knew a pianist by the name of Mick Pattinson that played there, does that ring any bells? fleetwood -
I used to like the 'Pete Smith Specialities' at the News theatre formally the 'Electra'. A person should 'Google' him, he was quite different and had a different slant on everything and was very funny. fleetwood

Commie chef at the grand hotel 1965
fleetwood replied to paul vardy's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Hi paul vardy - A friend of mine long deceased I'm afraid by the name of Pattinson, his father was a Sous Chef at the Grand around that time period, definitely a few years before and possibly at the time that you suggest. fleetwood -
Hi Charlie_F - Sorry I can't help. Your grandfathers title suggests he was a gunner with the artillery. I was in the Royal Signals in a little different time situation according to your statistics, I was with signal personnel exclusively in my camp. While everybody seems to give Moascar as the address, Moascar was a small town approximately 10 to 20 miles away. He would have been in a different camp in a different situation and in a different area to me, the whereabouts? I have no idea. Short of finding websites with more information related to your needs, good luck in your quest and endeavours.

Hi all = While on the subject of tobacco does anybody know if they still make the cigarillo's, (you can't call them cigars,) I think the name was 'Old Port', I think they were sold in a packet of five, obviously they were bigger than a normal cigarette and a little fatter and you've guessed it, they had a taste of wine? fleetwood

Hi all - Who remembers Kensitas cigs? Didn't they have a packet of four attached to the main packet, which said 'Four for your friends'? The main thing though was the 'Silk Flags' or I should say a white silk with an international flag emblazoned on, this was in a cellophane wrapper inside. At the time some manufactures had cigarette cards, they had the 'Flags' on silk. fleetwood

Andrews must have had an in with the Sheffield Education Committee at some level because that's where the schools sent you for school supplies of different descriptions when I was attending. fleetwood

Hi gramps48 - After checking into Lac La Hache it sounds a great area to retire to with all the recreational activities that seems to be plentiful in that area. Located 482 km northeast of Vancouver in the Cariboo region of British Columbia. If you want any more information on it just google Lac La Hache and you get its proximity to other towns as a map should appear and you'll get a better understanding of the whys and wherefores of the area. fleetwood

Hi gramps48 - Yes I have heard of Lac La Hache, I will do a bit of digging and get back to you on that one. fleetwood

I never said I was a fan of the music but it did lead to musicians gravitating to other genres and becoming quite good in their chosen type. I did enjoy the book though. Your notes (ha ha) on the other book on Julie London I thought I had covered because I had read the book, perhaps you might want to read my post in that regard. Try not to sound to sarcastic in future. fleetwood

The old washboard played a big part in the sound and what they were all about that's for sure. To name a few 'Rock Island Line' and 'Freight Train, Freight Train' fleetwood

Just read a great book by Billy Bragg 'Roots, Radicals and Rockers. 'How Skiffle Changed the World', it kind of started when Ken Colyer brought some turn of the century jazz recordings back from the States in the early forties. Now cut to Chris Barber and Lonnie Donnegan and their interpretation and the rest is history, soon groups by the hundreds were soon copying and playing, some better than others obviously. The book is British and current, incidentally the author Billy Bragg was mentioned on another thread related to the students union concert where he might have entertained. The book is worth a read because it is well written, enjoy! fleetwood

The old Middlewood Hospital history/records etc
fleetwood replied to Kry10's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I think people forget that Middlewood Hospital was at some point A Military Hosp. When I was doing my conscription I was taken ill while on leave and was admitted there on doctors orders, I also remember an officer coming with my pay. It seems to me the Military aspect of it dates way back, maybe first world war and beyond. fleetwood
