  1. Hi Sheffield Forumers. The snow has melted and my horrible garden has re-appeared, reminding me how depressing it looks. Im not used to having a garden.. i lived in a flat for years but now i have moved into a property with a long garden, and i dunno where to start!?? I dont even know how to plant a plant... never done it When it warms up a bit in Feb/March (wishful thinking) I could do with a gardener, or company, to come and get rid of all the straggly bushes and trees and dig round the grass to shape it into something a bit neater, plant some plants, re seed some of the grass where its rubbed off, and trim all the hedges... plus maybe re-do some of the fencing. I cant be bothered and wouldnt know where to start... Thing is i wouldnt want them coming back regular, Id do the upkeep myself cos i think id enjoy it, its just the initial hard work bit, so i dont know if companies will try and get u to get them to come back again and again?? Anyone had anything similar done, and if so could recommend a company/man/woman/other who is good at doing such things and wont charge me ridiculous prices??
  2. Been advised by kitchen fitter that we need a gas safe engineer to cap off our gas pipe from the gas hob being taken out (swapping it for an electric one...) Anyone know of any that are pretty quick to come out and do such a job? I need it doing tomorrow (mon 28th jan) or tuesday at the very latest really cos i wont be in rest of week and i neeeeed my kitchen finishing before i die of microwave ready meal overdose Just thought id ask on here cos its quicker/cheaper than ringing around Edited: Sorry i just read that thing at the top about not asking for tradesmen in this section... oops sorry.. i dunno how to delete it now
  3. Can also recommend jon cos i found him off here to do my boiler.. (but am sure the others are good too )
  4. When we first moved to sheffield we had a chinese from here. Thought it looked like a decent enough place... we were both VERY ill that night and following day after eating it. It tasted OK, nothing special, but we never visited it again obviously, so its interesting to read that...
  5. Ours ran out on friday after the first bit of snow and hasnt been refilled. All the ones around us are also empty. I watched the neighbour get 3 big bin bags full out of one of the grit bins to use on his drive which annoyed me! When we managed to get hold of some we had a carrier bag full and it did the drive just fine. Maybe if people werent so greedy with it...
  6. I agree. I have never recommended anyone on here before but i saw him post something on here and remembered my boiler needed servicing/repairing... (I couldnt be bothered to hunt for the yellow pages!) Very friendly and a gave a good price, so i will be recommending to people i know (Oh and i dont know him... whenever i read stuff on here i automatically assume, with my suspicious nature, the people leaving feedback are mates with the tradesman... or theyve been asked to leave feedback and feel obliged to do so... neither is the case with me )
  7. Yep.. it happens (in the NHS that is, i dont have experience of working at sheffield hospitals) There is always one or two who think they are above everyone else, better at the job, more intellignet/important etc. People who you look for on the rota and your heart sinks when u know theyre working on ur shift... They way i deal with this rubbish is to remind myself im only there to earn money to pay my bills and at the end of the day i go home to a loving family, so just go, get on with the job, and leave and forget about it... I notice the ones who do the bullying are usually people who DONT have a happy life at home, and work becomes their whole life. Got to feel a bit sorry for them really i suppose!
  8. Was it fluffy? I saw a sign up on a lamp post about a missing grey rabbit and it had a pic of a very fluffy grey rabbit... although the sign was in totley so i doubt a rabbit would get that far!?
  9. £1,550 is not too bad, I was expecting anything up to about £2,500 ish. Thanks.
  10. Why are people on here so nasty and sarcastic? There is absolutely no need for it and its always people who probably wouldnt dare say boo to a goose in real life! Anyway, a lot of supermarkets open 10-4pm. Maybe asda changed to 11-5 recently? Or maybe people think asda is also 10-4. Its a little silly to open when the tills cannot be used, especially a whole HOUR before!
  11. I would be seeking estimates from people based in Sheffield, e.g. people who have had similar porches added to their own house, or local builders prepared to give a rough ballpark.
  12. How much roughly would it cost for a front porch to be added to a house, approx 1.5m x 2m, 1 window, 1 door, slate sloped roof, exposed brick base of walls and then rendered on the rest of the walls? Thanks
  13. Hi, yes please feel free to PM me any details of recommended brokers. I'm surprised brokers themselves haven't bombarded me, must be the maternity leave issue
  14. We have a good idea of the best rates we can expect, so if we're pushed towards a worse rate we can always say no. At least on a commission basis they will do everything to get the application accepted? Normally we do it ourselves but being on maternity leave it could be trickier this time.
  15. Can anyone recommend a good mortgage broker for us? We are buying a house and I'm on maternity leave at the moment so we thought it might be better to go through a broker to fight our corner. Ideally no-fee and local, able to visit our house to avoid having to take our new baby along. Thanks
  16. I am close to making an offer on a house but it does need some work and would definitely need extending. To work out what we can afford I just want a rough guide of extension costs so would be grateful if any of you have had anything similar done could give a rough guide about costs? Having measured up, as a guide we're thinking a 12' x 6' extension, ground floor only but not flat roofed. We're open to further ideas though - that would be the minimum. We may go across the whole house (e.g. 22' x 6') if the cost difference is minimal. Also open to 2 storey extensions too, depending on cost. Thanks.
  17. Oh yes ive been to ths cafe and swore i would never go back, yeah its cheap, but the staff are like characters out of little britain... just not bothered at all, and the food isnt great.. plus the thought of them making it makes me feel a bit queasy.
  18. Phew it was BOILING in there today when i visited. Its a shame cos i like to have a nosey round to see if there are any good bargains, but i just couldnt be bothered today cos of the heat. I take my hat off to the staff who manage to spend all day in there! I hope they get it sorted soon for you.
  19. I just bought a new house, and the bathroom is really small and tired looking. It needs replacing A.S.A.P. Just wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere where i can just walk in, show someone the dimensions of my bathroom so they can advise me different bathroom combinations, pick my bathroom suite, trimmings and tiles, and have someone fit the suite, do the tiling, lighting, radiators..get rid of the old stuff everything really. Ive tried the obvious ones, B & Q, homebase etc, but i hear they are a rip off. Im wanting quality fixtures and fitting, but for a good price. Anyone had any good experiences recently?
  20. Yes it does thanks. How long ago was it? Who did it and would you recommend then?
  21. If it helps, there is already an equivalent dormer on the same floor at the same side, done a long time ago. The floor is already habitable. The existing dormer has a beam across to support the roof. It is in a bungalow roof so not sure about scaffolding.
  22. Has anyone got an idea of how much it would cost to install a dormer window into a pitched roof, where the floor is already boarded? It would be about 3 to 3.5 metres wide with one window uPVC and a mineral felt, almost flat roof.
  23. Washer dryer, of nearly 5 years no hassle service, has suddenly decided to stop working for Xmas. It turns on, then at the point when it would lock the door, it shuts all the electric down as the RCD breaker switches off. Normally it turns on, then when the wash is selected, it locks the door, then starts pumping the water several seconds later, but it's only getting to the point when a wash is selected, when the door would click locked, and then it switches everything off. Tried changing the fuse but still the same, tested something else in the same socket and it worked ok. Any ideas what could cause this? It's never done it before in nearly 5 years we've had it.
  24. £55 for 2.... seems pretty standard for a meal out to me.... or am i just a cheapskate..??
  25. Im sure i saw them, or at least a duck with a few baby ducks... in one of the front gardens of a semi-detatched house that fronts onto the main road just past where the flower shop/indian are. It was a run down old house with an overgrown front garden... with a group of ducks sat in the middle. Could these be the ducks? Never see them walking about though, always just sat there in the garden...
