Ladybower Reservoir photography shoot
Rossian replied to CraigRoberts's topic in Sheffield Photography
Thanks for posting this Craig, I enjoyed the video. It's inspired me to get out into the Peak District more often, not just when the whether is good! Here's the link for others (as I am able to post it) - -
Opinions on Park Hill Flats development
Rossian replied to Sharon sh's topic in Sheffield Property & Housing
I think the area isn't too bad now. In some ways the more studenty areas can be more attractive to criminals simply because students are an easy target. In terms of amenities, yes there is nothing immediately on the doorstep, but it's only a short walk to the city centre. To suggest you would need a taxi home from from bars and cafes in the city centre is ludicrous. Pretty much everything in the city centre is within a 20 min walk via the train station, and there's loads of stuff within 10 mins or less. -
Seems quite reasonable to me.

I went on Friday and really liked it. Happy to pay a bit more for the quality / atmosphere of the venue. They really need to get some decent beers in though. All I could see at the bar was bottles of Peroni.

Sheffield Fayre, 2013. Norfolk Heritage Park.

Lack of funding meant that the re-enactments had to be scaled back unfortunately. -
I used to have a A350 and the Flash was wireless. As Jazafeen says Sony DSLRs have built in wireless controllers that work really well - I never had any use for a cord.

How to let more people know a new website?
Rossian replied to Ivvy's topic in Sheffield Business & Employment
Google isn't the only way to attract traffic to your site. Social media and word of mouth can often be more affective, especially as it will often be impossible to get on the first page of Google for certain keywords. Getting people to write blog articles linking to your site (maybe offer some freebies in return if it's a product you are selling) is also a good idea. Then of course there is paid advertising - you can use Google Adwords, or something like Facebook advertising which can be more effective as it allows you to target people with very specific interests. -

Finding a job in IT (relocating to Sheffield)
Rossian replied to 30secondstos's topic in Sheffield Business & Employment
I agree there's a decent amount of work around if you are a good developer. I get on average 2 or 3 emails / Linkedin messages a week from recruitments consultants and companies looking for developers in Shefield. I've actually just started as a software engineer at Ibuildings and they are continually recruiting. Ibuildings only really do PHP and I think Plusnet and WANdisco are all open source technologies as well. I'm not that aware of a huge job market in Sheffield for Microsoft technologies (although Paul2412's post indicates otherwise). My impression is that the job market is increasingly moving towards open source. -
Giant new Tesco on Spital Hill / Saville Street.
Rossian replied to neeeeeeeeeek's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I think it's because it's a Tesco Extra which does a lot more than food - it's more like Argos (+ food) selling everything under the sun. -
They fixed this a while back with the new type of locks I think. I have one of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18394 which are meant to be pretty hard to break particularly because it is too small to use a jack on.

There is a lot of good advice in this thread. Do not believe anything you read in the papers - they will write whatever they think will sell newspapers. As someone else mentioned, read Ben Goldacre's "Bad Science".

Sole traders/umbrella companies
Rossian replied to gluedtopc's topic in Sheffield Business & Employment
I used Parasol for a bit (http://www.parasolgroup.co.uk/) but in the end decided it was better to set up a Ltd company. Depends how much extra work / hassle you want - there will be more work with a limited company, but you will walk away with more money in your pocket. -
I can't believe employers still ask questions like this. Do they really tell you anything about a potential employee? They are just asking for <REMOVED> rehearsed answers.

Graphic designers competition

You are launching a product nationally but don't have a budget for branding and design? Do you realise the importance of branding? It can mean the difference between success and failure. It should not just be an 'afterthought' which what it seems to be in this case. -
Don't vote for them in any future local or general elections. I think they'll get the message then.

I don't see this amount of anger and protest against the Conservatives though. I bet none of these protesters made the effort to go to their conference in Wales last week.
-
Pointless waste of effort and money if you ask me.

Supermarkets abusing the VAT increase

Only certain foods are zero rated. "Luxury" items, e.g. cakes, are standard rate. -
Here's an example of a breakdown of how the revenue from a $15.99 CD sale is split. The example is from USA but obviously will translate to UK as well. Don't think SB would see much of that £14. Artist royalties could be higher for a mix CD as well. $0.17 Musicians' unions $0.80 Packaging/manufacturing $0.82 Publishing royalties $0.80 Retail profit $0.90 Distribution $1.60 Artists' royalties $1.70 Label profit $2.40 Marketing/promotion $2.91 Label overhead $3.89 Retail overhead

Why are you objecting to a member of the licensing board coming on here and stating the facts? Surely that is a good thing on a forum where more often that not people's personal opinions and emotions regularly get in the way of the truth?

Have you ever been? When I used to go to the Tuesday Club there were people from all walks of life there. Obviously there were plenty of students, but plenty of non-students also. However maybe there are some "working class" people (as you call them) who seem to have something against students so I guess they may not want to go to a students Union for a night out . But I guess that's just a due to their own prejudice.
-
Incorrect, many nights at Sheffield Uni are open to the public. In fact the Tuesday club is one of Sheffield's longest and most successful non-mainstream nights and is open to the public.
