  1. These are 2 images showing the remains of the destroyed properties on http://www.picturesheffield.com, both dated 1968. http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;u06558&pos=13&action=zoom&id=99163 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;u06559&pos=14&action=zoom&id=99164 It was officially described as a Gas Explosion. I have been told that the bottom end of Canada Street was cordoned off, and an unexploded bomb was searched for but never found in 1940. A coincidence. ?
  2. I played in a couple of their midweek games around 1969. I do recollect that as you say the standard was high and some of their players also played for Rotherham Town in the Yorkshire league and also a wandering team that play away friendlies called the Sheffield Engineers. Despite turning up players short nearly every week, the star batsmen used to nearly always knock the runs conceded off; apart from when they met an even stronger British Steel team containing Salahuddin, who had toured with the 1962 Pakistan team before settling in Sheffield. ---------- Post added 25-09-2017 at 21:44 ---------- Apologies that I hadn't picked up on this post before. For the limited amount of time I was involved, the cricket team was run by Len Marney who was based at Mowbray Street. Can’t remember his Christian name but there was also a very pleasant fellow whose surname I think was Robinson, who was also based there. The format was matches of 14 eight ball overs innings, with the fastest bowler bowling down a hill with trees behind him as darkness fell, for which Longley Park was perfectly suited. A bowler named Cliff Handley was very quick indeed (at that level). The team was captained by a batsman of quality named Peter Ardron. Both of whom played for Rotherham Town in the Yorkshire League , and for the Sheffield Engineers wandering team, who had a friendly fixture list against respected league clubs in Lincolnshire and Notts . Like most other teams in the league, they suffered from player unavailability due to shift patterns. But other players of the same Yorkshire League / Council standard were often drafted in, and I can only recollect the team being beaten once (by BSC). Other players I recollect wre Norman Smith (who I think may have been based at Rutland Road) and Mick Renshaw who was based in the furniture warehouse at Walker Street. They they were often umpired by Michael Beck (who was based at the computer centre at Walker Street/ Brunswick Road) , who incurred greater wrath than that Sir Geoffrey was later to receive, after raising his finger to give an up and coming Derek Randall out lbw for a low score at Retford, whilst on officiating duty for the Engineers ! Happy days.
  3. Seventy four years ago tonight this crew set out on a mission to help free occupied Europe from tyranny. They, along with 55,00 others during the course of the war did not return.
  4. That was a decent gesture by the Football League to conveniently arrange you a game at Swindon, to enable Samir Carruthers to go and spray his wee wee round at Cheltenham a couple of days this week.
  5. Suspect many people who hadn't seen this (or who live away from the city now) would be interested in seeing the film. If the archive footage was made available on DVD, I guess there would be enough purchasers to make the exercise worthwhile financially, and be appreciated.
  6. What has amazed me of late, is that when approaching Brook Hill from Hanover Street, is the number of students who put their faith in this new phone app that Sheffield University must have developed. They seem to be able to look at that and time their run across the road in those few seconds after the lights have changed (to green for traffic), before the first cars have moved away, without even looking at either lights or traffic either. For their sake, I hope the app remains 100% reliable.
  7. Not seen much of the sun in Sheffield lately, then ?
  8. That (my first visit to Wembley, and still ticketless less than 48 hours before the game) still remains an unbelievable day - or even week of my life , with the build up and then the long come down. All you can do in your lives is your best. Wednesday played well that day. Did themselves proud. Unfortunately, so did Everton.
  9. No questioning of your courage to come on here and sya - (or even say) that. All the best. Enjoy what pleasures in this life (if any) remain for you, and hope you find happiness in the next.
  10. All the best with your battle, Pete. Let the grim reaper have the contents of both barrels. Keep your chin up .... and your attitude should be a source of inspiration to many.
  11. Wasn't suggesting you were. My point was plenty of people were glad to queue hours for it, at that time. Thankfully I was too young to be aware of rationing. If I went "without", I wasn't aware of it. At least one other poster on here ought to be similarly thankful.
  12. Off ration and available during war and post war years, means people queued hours for it. Nobody who saw how it came raw in latter years, would have eaten it. But as the saying went; if you were hungry you'd eat owt !
  13. Mrs Muriel Colley, who worked for many years on Colley's stall in Castle Market, died (Aged 91) peacefully on March 26th, 2015.
  14. In the Norse languages, "Grim" is ugly ,and "by" is town. Very perceptive people those Vikings, when they founded Grimsby !
  15. I am pleased to be able to report that common sense prevailed yesterday. The driver was doing his job, plod had kept his nose out, and passengers were being picked up. ---------- Post added 05-04-2015 at 18:15 ---------- I wouldn't have described him as a witness. A hard done by member of the public I would have said. You really clearly don't have a clue, what you are talking about.
  16. I witnessed the incident. There was no aggression at all, until the frustrated would be passengers realised that the driver stopped alongside them, was not going to open the doors. There was adequate space on that bus, for all waiting passengers to board. Might be a good idea for the driver to remember what his profession actually is , and act accordingly. If it was on a police directive, then the recent assessment in a courthouse that a commander was "not up to the job", seems to have passed down the line.
  17. Well done. Have a good day at Wembley. A great draw for you, and football as a whole. And a Yorkshire team guaranteed to be in the final.
  18. I wonder what the going rate was in 1912? ---------- Post added 31-01-2014 at 17:59 ---------- Holes cut out of a pumpkin?
  19. A couple of years back a Spanish listings channel, reported that a game between Arsenal and Fulham (but with "ck" replacing the "l") would be shown ! I don't think many people bothered watching it !
  20. We've had our problems with Marriner over the years ! Must be reassuring though, that somebody Bent didn't get "owt" at the Lane !
  21. Good draw for you. Credit where it is due, well done to you yesterday.
  22. I guess the "rec" you refer to was the one up by Danville Street? There was another one on the north side of Lyons Street; but for most of the year that was covered in broken glass and dog excrement, which meant it was not such an attractive proposition, in that the ball was usually puctured within the first hour of a game, or some kid needed to go home to "get cleaned up" ! Before the Easter and summer holidays; a "pre season " clearup operation was worthwhile, but at other times we (on that side of the hill) resorted to playing in the street; to the chagrin of some residents and at least one of PC Plod's colleagues, even if not him ! But, as he indicated if that was the only concern he police had today; then there would be nothing to worry about. Happy days.
  23. Good on yer , Plod. I'm sure those lads appreciated the common sense approach, and your efforts to build a community spirit with us. My post was not a criticism ; on the contrary - it was a light hearted attempt to highlight that we may have been a nuisance to you at some times ! Most of us turned out OK, and were brought up to know right from wrong.
