  1. I could not agree more with your comments about the quality of medium format (6x7) as we stand at the moment the quality is much better than the current crop of digitals (but for how long ?) but of course there will be others that say 6x7 is a poor second to half plate or or full plate. Check out the bickering on dpreview's forums about whether digital full frame i.e. sensor size = to 35mm film is better/necessary/desirable. I started serious (sic) photography in 1976 with a zenith SLR and hand held light meter, I have tried all sorts of cameras since including a rolleiflex TLR and various Japanese and German 35mm cameras. Now I just have a Fuji S7000 digital and a Canon 35mm SLR (the one that stays in the gadget bag) and a couple of zoom lenses. I'm not a pro, I don't sell my work, I just like to produce photographs, for me the image is what's important not how its produced. The point is digital suits me and the vast majority of new camera buyers, look at the sales figures and the fact that traditional film makers are struggling, agfa no more, ilford no more, Kodak losing money (over $1billiion loss in the third quarter of this year) and halting production/marketing of film cameras, only fuji seems to be ok. Some of the big high street retailers have stopped selling film cameras already. I think what will happen is that consumer and the majority of pro' film photography will die and be replaced with digital. Film will be the preserve of enthusiasts, including some of those who make a living from photography. Sorry no Carl Zeiss lenses left, everything's gone on ebay except for my darkroom gear that I can't sell or even give away it seems. dpreview
  2. Congratulations my boys are grown up now but still bring joy every day (especially when they do the washing up)
  3. Would whoever allowed their brontosaurus (to much for a dog) to cr*p out side my house this afternoon please come an clean it up.
  4. Tomorrow we "celebrate" the 400th anniversary of the ritual putting to death of the only man to enter the British parliament with honest intentions. I say ban fireworks for public sale and enjoy the municipal/organised events. Having said all that, bonfire night is part of British culture and I like it, I am fed up of being told British cultural things should be banned because they might "offend" and then being told how wonderful it is that other ethnic/religious groups celebrations are wonderful. Why can't we all have our cultures and religious celebrations, share them and enjoy them in our own way without little Hitlers or religious zealots making life more difficult than it already is.
  5. I am from happy valley, or Stocksbridge as everyone else calls it and although my politics aren't aligned with Martin Davis he has worked well for the area over the years and I have respect for him and his deeds. I am not surprised he has finally quit the Lib's, they are just opportunists and "oppose" with no vision or practical ability. As another poster pointed out they were in power for a few years in Sheffield and look how the "Sheffield+" graph turned down then. Redrobbo welcome to the forum as an outed member, I am sure your posts will hold more gravitas than ever, and so much the better for the rest of us that a council member takes the time to come onto the forum and join in a dialogue with real people with real opinions on whats important to Sheffield people
  6. The next one !! all the ones so far have complete failures. I wanted to use a much stronger word than "failure" but thats it they were all just failures. No dogma, political retoric, economic circumstances, explanations, excuses, reasons, double talk, spin, call it what you will, just failure. On Saturday night we celebrate the 400th aniversary of the ritual putting to death of the only man to enter the british parliament with honest intentions, Guido Fawkes, there was a political activist (or religious terrorist if you prefer) for you. Actually the plotters were executed some months later. November the fifth 1605 was when parliament was supposed to go up.
  7. I too used to have my own darkroom and mess around for hours in the dark to produce just one superb (sic) 20x16 but now the darkroom's gone and my 35mm SLR cameras, lenses etc are left in the bag unused (those that still haven't gone via ebay) I have seen the light, digital is the way. I still produce prints occasionally but only of something special, now I use the computer/printer. My preferred option is to post process in photoshop then burn the pictures onto a cd in JPG format shove it in the DVD player and have a slideshow on the telly. Digicams are getting better all the time £600 quid will buy you a DSLR that is better in almost every respect than its 35mm equivalent, only very low ISO rated film and professional processing will get you better
  8. I'd recommend Keswick in the lakes Its big enough to have a night life, lots of good places to eat and the beer, mostly Jennings is pretty good these days. SHMBO and I have been doing the weekend in autumn thing for 25 years (god that makes me sound old but we've been together since we were kids)
  9. God only knows - and this my third!! AND they won't go in a standard garage and they all leak if you leave them outside.
  10. AND They are terribly unreliable, uncomfortable and rubbish to drive.
  11. I think I just let slip which side of the fence I am on. The petrol series three landrover does 15 to the gallon has no catalytic converter and it accelerates, stops and steers like an ocean liner.
  12. Seriously, I am restoring a 30 year old Landrover and I know what it takes to get it started with the starting handle.
  13. Better still, ban electric starter motors, that would get all the women and old people off the road!! fill the busses reduce polution, congestion and leave the road open for us big lads strong enough to swing the starter handle. Please don't come and burn my house down, I'm only joking!!
  14. Look at the word Christmas(s) i.e. a mass to celebrate Christ its a celebration of the birth of the founder of the religion. Speaking as someone who does not follow any religion I must say there does seem to be some double standards around here, last week we were all talking about going to Liecester for the Divali celebration simply because its an enjoyable experience and I think thats why other religious groups celebrate christmas, let the people who want the religious experience have it and those who just want to have a good time do it here way. As for the pc looney who suggested banning christmas because it might offend other religious groups he/she needs to get out more and meet some real people. Most people are happy to live and let live and celebrate their faith how they wish.
  15. Just to broaden the bread thing a bit further to the north west of sheffield (that little corner of gods own county we think of as happy valley) we call the bread product that your local sandwich shop uses a teacake!! what everyone else calls a teacake we call a current teacake. A fishcake is two slices of potato sandwiching a slice of fish, battered and deep fried. A rissole is mashed potato, fish, parsley and seasoning coated in bread crumbs and deep fried. I expect this thread to really take off now with fresh controversy over this vital, globally significant subject
  16. I guess I'm fortunate that I have a drive and garage and never park on the road. but I have to agree with the other posts If your car is taxed, tested and insured you can park anywhere that does not have restrictions (which can only be introduced by the council or police) residents have no right to the space on the road outside there house.
  17. Lets start a list, what do you put Hendo's on I'll kick off with:- Stew Casserole (of any type) Fish and chips
  18. I have been a lurker around S.F. for a few weeks now since I first came across the forum and I must say I have found it interesting, informative and sometimes extremely funny. However I have been tempted to make my first post to this thread by this silly woman "Miss Wainwright". I have what you would call a south Yorkshire accent (not the dee dah of true Sheffield) but I am proud of my accent, it identifies me, it gives me cultural roots and says to any one who hears me speak "I am a Yorkshireman and proud of it". People who abandon their cultural backgrounds and accents by adopting whats called BBC English are denying their heritage and pretending to be something they are not, charlatans in fact. As to all the other stuff about richer people living in nicer houses ,well yes but that's nothing to do with class or accent.
