  1. You had your wish until recently when the tracks were being repaired along Langsett Road. Did it make the highways any better? Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  2. I assume it is a joke, no-one's that daft that they really think the police should go round measuring how wide bike tyres are, do they?
  3. Apparently there was an El Nino 2009-10, which might have had some effect on the winter before the really bad one. No El Nino in 2010. Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  4. Tommo68, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. If my driving licence is somehow not enough to qualify me to ride a bike on the road, OK I'll do extra training. Motorists should do some extra training too, including showing evidence of having ridden a cycle or moped safely for six months before they can get a provisional licence. 5. No offence taken. It is illegal to cycle on pavements. There are a lot of occasions though when it makes more sense to do so for a short stretch than to use a road. As long as no inconvenience is caused, it won't be a problem. But clearly there are numptys on two wheels unable to break the law in a considerate manner that doesn't cause grief. 6. I do remember that. I thought 2010 winter was a strong North Arctic Oscillation? Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  7. A company called Connaught went bust as they underquoted on a housing stock maintenance contract. One that had been legally challenged by the incumbent for being unrealistically low priced. Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  8. I thought El Nino just made it rain here, wet summer, mild winter. Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  9. It would depend on the cyclist. When a motorist caused me to take evasive action leading to a crash they left the scene. Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android
  10. I've been able to smell oilseed rape all over Sheffield when it's been warm and dry. Too cold today, but I think this year's been a bad year for pollen.
  11. I'm much more worried about being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, as their heavier vehicle will cause much more damage and more serious injury than a cycle. In some parts of Sheffield, this is reported to be as high as 10% of vehicles on the road (figures from memory, may be inaccurate). In a lot of cases, a cyclist at fault in an accident will be injured or have a damaged and unusable bike, meaning they will stay at the scene People seem to be able to provide anecdotes and theories, but no hard evidence as to the extent of problems caused by uninsured cyclists. I suspect uninsured cyclists who ride off after causing accidents belong in the same realm as bogeymen.
  12. For a motorist with comprehensive insurance plus legal cover it will be pretty straightforward to recover costs from a cyclist. It's not that straightforward if the party at a loss doesn't have legal cover/insurance of their own, if the cyclist doesn't have insurance (many in fact do) and doesn't pay up voluntarily. But, as a matter of interest, does anyone know what the cost of RTCs caused by cyclists actually is? I suspect people are getting het up over a small matter in the grand scheme of things.
  13. I looked back through the thread and now the 'quotes of Derbyshire police' make sense. When I looked up on google, the top hit for 'cyclist quotes of Derbyshire police' was for a naked cyclist holding up traffic on the A6. Second, third and fourth hits referred to a fatal accidents involving cyclists showing the gravity of the situation...... Welder1, if you can find any statistics showing that cyclists cause enough damage every year, across the country as a whole then maybe you'd have a real argument in favour of requiring cycle insurance. You could then take this to your local MP and ultimately the transport secretary if you feel so strongly about it. Might achieve more than spouting off on an internet forum.
  14. There are certain bits of Sainsbury's that are noticeably colder than the room around them. It's always the same bits of the shop that feel that little bit colder than everywhere else; I get a shiver every time I walk through them. It's strongest near the open refrigerated displays.
  15. Sycamore trees aren't native, they were brought over in the middle ages I think.
  16. This ought to catch on. You've eliminated the agility and small footprint of a bike, but at the same time eliminated the speed, safety and comfort of a car. I'm in!
  17. Reminds me of Connaught/ Norwich City Council mess. Lived through that five years ago.
  18. C'mon folks, it's not that bad. Someone who was here 20 years ago visited a few weeks back and commented how much more developed it was. Station forecourt, Millennium Galleries, Peace Gardens, Devvie Green. Sheffield Station has the Tap; neither Lime St. nor Piccadilly can boast that. As to not getting hot food on a bank holiday; that's one venue. There are literally hundreds open on a Sunday across Sheffield city centre. Still it's probably the communists' fault anyway.... Sheffield definitely has fewer crazies wandering round shouting than Leeds.
  19. I'm not an engineer, but I was pretty sure most rail (light and heavy) had a service life of ~20 years. The following quotes from the supertram website back this up: β€œWhen the tram system was installed in 1994, it was widely expected at the time that the rail would have a 30-year lifespan. However, over the past two years, it has become clear that this replacement work needs to be carried out sooner rather than later to ensure the people of Sheffield, and the wider region, have a robust and reliable tram network in the future.” And "Once the replacement work is complete, it is thought that the new rails – made from harder wearing steel - will have a life-expectancy of 25-30 years" We shall wait and see.... In the meantime, if we absolutely have to use buses or trolleybuses instead, couldn't they be made much lighter to avoid them damaging the roads so much? In terms of reducing congestion with only minor infrastructure investment, buses will work if people use them. But in terms of damage to roads, increasing bus numbers or introducing trolleybuses instead of more expensive trams would be a nightmare (in theory)!
  20. When did the tramlines first go in? 1994-95 according to Wikipedia. They lasted at least 19 years, first replacements were 2013 weren't they? 12 inch deep undulations are no laughing matter, if you find the term 'rut' so amusing!
  21. He was and still is isn't he? Nellist is in TUSC now. I would definitely support anyone doing that, if they said what they'd do with the rest of the salary. I would use it to employ someone to apply for every possible bit of Regional Growth Fund and European Regional Development Fund money going for social enterprise and respectable companies in the constituency.
  22. What about Jim Stop the Fiasco Wild who won't take a full MP's salary? But then maybe that's because he's already a millionaire anyway, I don't know.
  23. Or a 'quick report' button for when services don't arrive? I have a feeling part of the problem is that travel companies' senior management don't realise how much of a problem it is. People with hands on purse-strings to sort things out are probably management or money people rather than bus people.
  24. It's not a nasty feeling. What you said is very similar to Kinnock's 'If you're old, pray the tories don't get in tomorrow, if you're young pray the tories don't get in tomorrow, if you're ill.....' speech. That was in the '87 election campaign, I think. You did a good job in turning it round to be positive vote for labour. Which I support.
  25. I've got a nasty feeling you're plagiarising one Neil Kinnock there. Principled and competent he might have been, but he didn't do too well at winning elections so it was all for naught....
