Sheffield To Ban Adverts For Unhealthy Or Polluting Products

Adverts for a wide range of polluting products and brands, including airlines, airports, fossil fuel-powered cars (including hybrids) and fossil fuel companies, will not be permitted on council-owned advertising billboards under the new Sheffield City Council Advertising and Sponsorship Policy. The council’s social media, websites, publications and any sponsorship arrangements will also be subject to the restrictions. 

 

This breaks new ground in the UK, with Sheffield going further than any other council to remove polluting promotions. Sheffield declared a climate emergency in 2019, alongside many other local councils. This step demonstrates a real commitment to reducing emissions, driving down air pollution, and encouraging a shift towards lower-carbon lifestyles.

 

Protecting health and wellbeing

 

The policy also restricts the promotion of gambling, alcohol, vaping and unhealthy food, and explicitly aims to protect against the disproportionate impact of unhealthy advertising on lower income communities and young people. Recent research by Adfree Cities showed that advertising billboards are overwhelmingly concentrated in communities with higher social deprivation. 

 

By including specific criteria that prioritises small local businesses, the policy also aims to protect Sheffield's local economy. After consultation with other councils and outdoor advertising companies, Sheffield’s Finance Committee concluded that the financial impact of the policy was likely to be low (approx. £14,000-£21,000) compared to the costs incurred via pressures on the NHS and other services.

I'm so tired of this climate emergency guff. "Sheffield Council declared a climate emergency in 2019"? 

If the council is so bothered why not do something practical rather than this silly idea. Reducing the amount of traffic lights so traffic can flow and isn't Stop Start Stop Start all day long would be a good start in my opinion.

I can see where SCC is coming from & valant principles but all they are really doing is denying themselves a source of revenue & all the companies will do is use the other billboards around Sheffield that aren't SCC controlled. 

 

Principles don't pay the bills.

If the advertising space can be used by local businesses, then sure that's great.

 

of course that's so long as they can afford it, and they don't fall into the same category of exclusion.

This is a practical step.

 

It isn't mutually exclusive with traffic lights.

 

There are many steps to take to combat the climate emergency, this is but a very small one of them.

Now what SCC could do of course, unhealthy food wise, is to stop licensing retail units across the city for fast food / takeaway outlets, 

 

Take any council estate anywhere in Sheffield & they're will be a row of half a dozen shops that used to be a news agent, butchers, hardware, bakery, etc.  Now SCC will have re-licenced the units so you have  4 takeaways & 2 vape shops.

with the resultant carbon costs required to build the infrastructure, the energy costs associated with them but hey not seeing a petrol car on a bill board or  Owlerton getting advertised is going to make Sheffield healthier and cleaner

Let's all remember the local elections for SCC and the City Regional Mayor are coming up on

2 May.

 

So if one wants to get rid of the tools who brought in all the decisions that people have been whining about on here about for months -  now's the chance.   Use it or lose it.
