Recommended Posts

The insurance companies claim it is much more expensive to repair cars nowadays due to the electronic technology in modern cars which is why there has been a big rise in premiums.  Martin Lewis recommends getting quotes for renewals three weeks before the due date..

It's getting to the point where you might as well drive without insurance. You'd have to get caught 3 or 4 times for the fines to be equal to the yearly cost of insurance.

I would strongly advise anyone contemplating this to think again.  The subsequent penalties may well turn out to be more expensive than you might think.  Consider how you would feel if you had a collision and injured someone or worse!?

I obviously wasn't being serious.

I'm very pleased to hear that.  I appreciate that you weren't advocating driving without insurance. 👍

However, I have seen first-hand the devastation an uninsured driver has left behind and believe me, it's no joking matter

It gets better.

I've been ringing around. Found a company that will insure me, exact same cover as current insurer.

It has increase but £100 is better than £1000.

The best bit, they're owned by the same parent company as my current insurer...

Presumably you have tried comparison websites as well as ringing around. Reminds me of getting car insurance pre-internet, on the phone for what seemed an age, reciting the same details to as many companies as you could be bothered to call.

Alot of people have given up, if they're not on a comparison website they can sod off.

Direct Line for example, the times I have gone to the trouble of getting a quote from them it's never been remotely competitive.

The cheapest quote I got was calling the cheapest one on the comparision site. The comparison site was £200 more than speaking directly.

I use the comparison sites as more of a shortlist creator. I then call the top 3 to 5 and see where I get from there.

Well that always used to work for me up until this year.  This time my insurance quote went from £300 to £508.  The trouble was the comparison sites were all about the same.

I’ve found that with my car and my home insurance. Loads of quotes, all very close to each other.

It’s almost as though they are working together 🙄

It's long been accused (and denied) that insurance companies collude to keep prices at certain levels.
