Near us they built a new estate on green field site . People buying the houses were promised Doctors ,Chemist , Pub , shops , play areas , public transport , etc . They got the first 2 . The nearest corner shop is about 20 minutes walk away 4 hours ago, S1 1DJ said: Could easily reach Meadowhall, Crystal Peaks and possibly town within 15 minutes from there 🤔 Not sure who'd be mad enough to live surrounded by lots of road pollution, not to mention what's left underneath. It takes me 15 minutes to walk to Crystal Peaks and I live just up the road .
 Share this content via...

School Library pub shops cafes park dentist gp surgery etc. etc.  it's just things you might reasonably expect people to want/need/use on a day-by-day basis, all within a 15min walk of their house.  See Crookes, or Woodseats for examples.  (Woodseats also an example of an established LTN that literally *nobody* is asking to reverse)    Except work. How many people work in their local area these days? How many jobs are available in their local area? ads36   219 #1155 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) The last time i checked, people work in GP surgeries, shops,, schools, pubs, libraries, hairdressers, dentists, etc. etc.  I saw a job advert in the window of my local bike shop; they need a mechanic, and the pay isn't much lower than what i'm getting paid here. Only the Commute would be a 5minute walk, and i could take my dog to work with me - it's very tempting!  This whole '15min neighbourhood' really gained legs as a neat way of explaining how Europeans live, to Americans : a lot of America is covered by very strict zoning laws - effectively making it illegal to build houses within a walkable distance of shops, etc. You literally *have* to drive everywhere. Consequently, their suburbs really sprawl, they're huge - making the problem even worse.  Crosspool: there's another area in Sheffield that fits the '15min' concept quite nicely.  Lowedges, Fulwood, Greenhill, Broomhill, Hillsborough, Darnall, Sharrow, etc. etc. Sheffielders should be very familiar with the idea of a walkable neighbourhood, so it's odd to see so much opposition to the very heathly characteristics that people clearly enjoy about their neighbourhoods.  Our unfortunate friends in America will need to change laws, and literally re-build their cities* to incorporate the '15min' concept.  Here, we need to make sure we don't lose it.  (and we are losing it) Edited August 9, 2023 by ads36
 Share this content via...

Wasting your words I'm afraid. The idea that people favouring local facilities, can't possibly work anywhere other than the council, or the university is too hard for them to comprehend.  From a fellow engineer.....maybe you need the intellectual rigour required in engineering to understand the concept 😀
 Share this content via...

ads36   219 #1160 Posted August 10, 2023 (edited) this is just bizarre - how can anyone get so very upset and angry by local amenities?  i have no idea how to engage with this.  Yes, i walk to my local shops, library, pub. Tonight MsWife will walk to her local yoga class. Me and his lordship (dog) will walk round to escort her home.  (she's his favourite, he'll just sulk by the front door till we go and get her)  i usually bike to work. We have a car, i'm not telling anyone to stop driving. Edited August 10, 2023 by ads36
 Share this content via...

No one is upset or angry as far as I know, except maybe you  -  what's bizarre about it. if you don't know how to engage, you should perhaps, show more patience, and be less dogmatic. It would also help to refrain from trying to fool everyone that there are loads of jobs for all,   just down the street. Get used to the idea that everyone doesn't have everything they need within 15 minutes of their home, so stop pretending they do. The idea of 15 minute neighbourhoods is a good one and I was brought up living in a 3 minute neighbourhood so I understand the benefits. I don't live in one now and that applies to many of Sheffield's population so, despite your frustration, that's not going to change very quickly. Glad that you practise what you preach but but, if our facilities are not there, we just can't walk to them.  That should be simple enough to understand.
 Share this content via...

Some of us are saying it would be good if they were, and that the development of them should be encouraged, even mandated for new developments.  Broomhill and Sharrowvale are good examples, equidistant from where I live, I can and do easily walk to them and they provide a lot of what I need without the need to drive. More of the same would be a good thing, as I'm sure you agree with from your post above.
 Share this content via...

More of the same would be a good thing, as I'm sure you agree with from your post above. I do fully agree with that. As I said, I was brought up with every shop we needed, including Post Office, Chip shops and Co-Op, and we had 2 Pubs within 100 yards and a Cinema 10 yards away from our door. I also walked to work and back every day, about 6 miles round journey and still consider that It was a far better way of life than todays. Having said that, much has changed since then and we no longer have the facilities that we used to have. I seems that some people will not accept that fact and start insisting that we do have them. Another thing which does not get taken into consideration is peoples different abilities. Someone in their 20's can walk a lot further in 15 minutes than can someone in their 80's like myself. That young person could also carry heavy shopping bags much easier than could I or my partner who is older than me. Some posters assume that we are all young and fit and that the weather is always mid summer when we do our errands / shopping. They need to talk about the real world instead of just theirs.   Edited August 10, 2023 by Organgrinder
 Share this content via...
