Harrystottle   10 #1 Posted April 16, 2017 Turkish President Erdogan wants the office of President to be granted more powers, including the ability to directly appoint top figures in the judicial system and cabinet members. Opinion polls show a 50 - 50 split.  Thing is, there could be trouble in places like Germany and Austria as there are lots of Turks there who are just as split on the matter as the ones at home. Lively times ahead.
 Share this content via...
Guest   #2 Posted April 16, 2017 (edited) Of course he will get absolute power. This referendum is just pro forma, and it's staged like that coupe last summer. Erdogan is puppet on the string, controlled by Putin. Edited April 16, 2017 by Guest
 Share this content via...

Harrystottle   10 #5 Posted April 16, 2017 Just been on Sky news that millions of ballot papers without the official stamp on them are being allowed to be counted! That sounds well dodgy.
 Share this content via...

tzijlstra   11 #7 Posted April 16, 2017 There is a very annoying thing going on here, Dutch and German media keep reporting that the majority of Dutch/German Turks are pro-Erdogan. This is based on a very vocal group that stages protests at every opportunity. In reality (and speaking from experience as I know a lot of Dutch Turks) the second and third generation can't stand Erdogan and know he is a fraud.  Unfortunately, that is not going to sell newspapers though. Let's have a look at Cologne for example - population consists of 60000 Turks, pro-Erdogan protest attracted 40000 Turks. Possible gathered from other locations as well, but still significant number. samssong   10 #9 Posted April 16, 2017 And I bet they are all votes for Ergodan He can do what he wants now , the intellectuals, judges and military languishing in jail as well as the Kurds in northern Syria had better get ready for what ever he will now throw at them without any opposition from any one in Turkey's so called democracy .  ---------- Post added 16-04-2017 at 22:10 ----------  They dont have much of a choice. taxman   12 #10 Posted April 16, 2017 (edited) It seems that most people living in big cities voted for Parliamentary Democracy, the majority of poor Islamists out in the sticks voted for "A Strong Leader".  Kamel Ataturk must be spinning in his grave.  ---------- Post added 16-04-2017 at 23:10 ----------  And your estimation is based only on small number of Dutch Turks you know. Anti Erdogon protestors are noticeable by their absence due to the real fear of being arrested or the fact they are already incarcerated.  Even if you are in Cologne you will still have vulnerable relatives back home. Flanker7 Â Â 20 #12 Posted April 16, 2017 48-52% split. Â They are reporting that its not a good enough majority to sanction, peaceful, big changes in the constitution. Â The similarities to our Europe Referendum are a many and a bit bit scary if their reaction is mirrored over here.
 Share this content via...
