Dozer   13 #62 Posted May 31, 2013 Don't forget lots of people work in town and use public transport to get there and back. It'll be great to be able to meet friends after work, head straight for something to eat and catch a movie, all in one place, without having to travel to Centertainment or fragment the evening between an eatery and the Odeon.  Excellent point. What a dream! We could do the whole evening on foot -- dinner on London Road (or The Moor if it gets some more restaurants), and then a movie. Beats the telly. No-one who was lucky enough to have their father drive them up the Moor in the early seventies at Christmas time could ever forget how good the illuminations were.  I still prefer town to Meadowhall, prefer its bars and restaurants, the good bits (Millennium Galleries, Winter Gardens, the theatres) and I don't think the parking charges in private car parks is excessive.  Let's get the Moor back on its feet and then turn to phase two: demolish the hideous, ugly former Manpower Building which cut the city off from Ecclesall Road, a decent avenue of shops leading away from the city centre. Ousetunes   10 #66 Posted May 31, 2013 I remember the Manpower going up. It was a disaster even then. A sick building and a planning abomination!  Absolutely.  When one could walk down Ecclesall Road and its lovely shops to the large Co-op (another lovely building bulldozed by our council) and cross the street to Moorfoot and walk past quality shops all the way up to Fargate.  Lennon said it: you don't know what you got (sic) till you lose it. Or in our case, Sheffield City Council planners wreck it.
 Share this content via...
WallBuilder   10 #67 Posted May 31, 2013 I've not actually looked closely at the manpower building but do remember that it had or has a large opening right through the middle at ground level, if that is still there then why can't it be opened up as a thoroughfare as it was supposed to be. I find it interesting that people moan about it cutting the centre off from London road but car drivers seem to want there to be wide clear flowing major roads right through the centre and around it which I personally consider to be far worse at cutting a city apart. BEDROCK   10 #68 Posted May 31, 2013 The Moor now has a big hole in it. Took this on Wednesday  https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1205_10152875035450068_1528306239_n.jpg  By Thursday it had all gone.  Had a look today it is totally gone more or less, they are just clearing the site now, looks like its all steam ahead on the Moor.  They have also put the fairground rides on there now so looks like they are putting things in place to entice people down.  The Moor Markets look to be almost complete so that should be done this year ready for the influx of businesses. The remnants of old shop signage (Freeman Hardy Willis for one) under the removed recent signs brought back memories, I meant to go down there with my camera and it slipped my mind  Back on topic, I feel the same as some others. I'd probably not go for a night out, but meeting friends in a convenient central location for a cinema visit after work - definitely better than faffing going home and heading back out to an out of town location. They were not associated with the 1970's Prog Rock beat combo of a similar name.  K. Edited May 31, 2013 by karl101
 Share this content via...
MJbayley   10 #71 Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) Looks like Primark may be taking the 80,000 Sq foot unit, although this was probably expected > http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=103844895&postcount=4412  For those interested the new moor market units will be taken by Tj Hughes, Poundland (apparently) and a frozen food retailer. Don't think this accounted for all the units Edited June 1, 2013 by MJbayley
 Share this content via...
