Impressive *NOT*

However, it does have to be said while the speed is rather disappointing, I am after all paying for a 12Mb down, 1.3Mb up, I was on Virgin for years, but after the umpteenth fail where some technician had to be called out I gave up, BE internet has been solid with no fail, and in normal use, (browsing and email) I can't tell the difference in speed. It is only when I am downloading large files is the slower speed noticeable.

With O2 Broadband in Crookes S10 area.

That's pretty good. I'm with O2 in Walkley (Opposite the Cottage) and I have to use DGTeam firmware and fiddle with the SNR adjustment in the router to get this.

It does say I have a grade C connection, but this begs to differ.

Speed has very little to do with your provider. Sure, it makes a difference if your exchange is over capacity or if your provider is throttling ports but for the most part one provider will give you the same speed as another.

It's hard to show for definate without explaining sync rates and broadband overheads and profiles, but trust me.

If you are on an upto 20mb package with one provider, you're still going over the same equipment to the exchange.

The only time this varies is if there is a fault in the ISP's equipment in the exchange, but then that's not their fault.

The main things that will affect your speed are:

(Things out of your control)

Distance from the telephone exchange

Length of cabling within the exchange

Quality of the cabling

(Things within your control)

Quality router - This means no TP-Links, Belkins or otherwise.

Quality Filters (or even better a filtered faceplate)

Router connected to the Master Socket

Disconnecting the bell wire from the extension sockets.

If you're line is stable, and your ISP is willing, they can request an SNR change on the line. I'm just running shy of 3.0db. If I go back to the ISP's standard of 6db, I get around 2mb.

If I was you, I'd be on the phone to O2 complaining about that speed.
