Potted dog, where do we get the name from?

As per title, I grew up knowing Potted Meat called Potted Dog, where did the 'dog' come from?

 

And while were at it, is it just us Sheffielders who call it potted dog?:help:

No idea, I do however now know what I am having for dinner tomorrow

 

When I used to take my snap to work I used to take potted Dog on fridays which always clashed with chippy day.

Potted dog chip buttys, my idea of heaven!

I love Potted meat sandwiches, especially with sliced tomato on.

 

And lots of salt and pepper. Food of the gods! And made from real dogs in a factory near Tesco on Ecclesall Rd.
