According to that show on BBC1, I think the best way is to go to Japan.

I wouldn't have believed this if I hadn't seen it work twice but eating a pinch of sugar seems to make them stop immediately.

Hiccups are just a spasm of the diaphragm, so if you stretch your diaphragm down into your abdomen and hold it there for as long as you can and relax very gently then this should sort the hiccups out. Occasionally you may need to repeat, but not that often.

Stretching the diaphragm is really simple to anyone who has learned abdominal breathing for singing or projecting the voice. Rather than pushing the chest wall outwards to inhale, push the diaphragm down. To maintain the stretch for longer than a single breath just breathe in the top portions of your lungs whilst keeping the stretch going.

Stick your fingers in your ears, hold your nose and have a drink - looks ridiculous but works every time! :D

i second that. Altho i just have a finger in each ear and get someone to feed you a glass of water. Or drink from the tap if your alone. Satisfaction guaranteed!

I had never heard of this cure until recently. Now my son keeps asking if I will give him hiccups (or haircups as he pronounces it), just so that he can drink with his fingers in his ears. Personally, I have always just maintained that the controlled breathing is sufficient, as per Medusa's post.

I hate hiccups so much.

The absolute worst is when you're all chilled and relaxed on the sofa of an evening, and the second you stand up to go to bed they make an appearance.

I've tried all the deep breathing, holding breathe, drinking water with fingers in ears, eyes, nose, bumhole etc and nothing gets rid of them. So I lay there in bed getting angrier and angrier - even the way they make the bed shake is unbearable  (but maybe thats a bed shaking story best left for another day)

I feel quite angry now, why did you start this thread?:hihi:
