redrobbo
Liverpool = Labour gained sufficient seats from Lib Dems to move the council to No Overall Control (after the last seat was recounted 3 times, giving the Lib Dems a majority of only 7 in that ward!). However, a former Labour councillor, who changed to Independent and was not up for re-election, has now announced that she will take the Lib Dem whip, thus leaving Liverpool in Lib Dem control! happyhippy
Looking bad for Labour in Wales. PC have gained seats in Ynys Mon (Anglesey) and Ceredigion. {But I won't let the Anglesey results spoil my forthcoming holiday in North Wales!} Bury = Conservative GAIN from No Overall Control Ynys Mon has been Plaid Cymru territory in Parliamentary elections for some time, so that doesn't surprise me. JoJo72.0114
This is sad news for local democracy. Right on our border too. The BNP brigade in Sheffield will no doubt be attending the count at Ponds Forge hoping that they can emulate their successes in Rotherham. If the vote had gone labour's way would it be a sad day for democracy? This is democracy in action - wake up and smell the coffee

redrobbo
I've got to get up in 5 hours time (and then try and look fresh at the count!). So, I'm saying goodnight to the forum, turning off the radio, and (given the national results for Labour tonight) maybe secretly turning to drink! not wanted
Well It looks like Brown has totally buggered it up. At the moment this is looking like a worse result that 2004 when the anti war protest was at it's highest. Labour lose Merthyr Tydfil. redrobbo
Ooh! A new one! Ynys Mon was a real Plaid Cymru stronghold for years! Ynys Mon is an interesting parliamentary seat, and has been held by four parties in the last 50 years. It was Liberal until 1951, then Keith Best held it for the Conservatives until 1987. Then Plaid Cymru held the seat until 2001, after which Albert Owen won it for Labour in 2001, and held it at the last general election. It was either Neil or Glynis Kinnock's brother who fought the seat for Labour in 1987 (but didn't win). Hmmm ... I really ought to get some sleep now!
