SHYTOT
How do we find out the council election candidates views on this subject and would they follow a party line? How they would vote on this subject will directly affect who I vote for. I very good point and an easy one for candidates to answer. There is nothing to stop a party stating the party line. It is only individuals who have to maintain supposed neutrality. So far Labour are backing the sale of parkland. The Lib/Dems are against the sale of ANY parkland The Greens have made it clear that they now oppose the sale of the land from Graves Park The Conservatives won't comment which I take to indicate they will back Labour. No idea about the others. Someone could perhaps ask.
anarchist
I think the Labour Councillors hide behind the non comital cloak as they know they stand to lose votes if they quote their true policy of selling off parkland. It seems they are at it here as well... http://www.swcp-online.co.uk/page1.html

clogginchris
What vote in 2007 would that be, the decision not to sell graves park was made at a rather heated meeting I'm told in Feb of this year. Weren't you there? Sorry - I think I might be confused - I was talking about the Council vote referred to in June 2007 in an earlier post. And no, I wasn't there - I'm not a member of the green party. Was just passing the info on for anyone interested.
clogginchris
I was talking to a councillor last night, and he said that they've had hundreds of letters and emails from both sides. Many of them are standard letters, sent to all councillors. He said that these are worth only as much as signatures on a petition, and individually written letters or emails to targetted councillors, carry much more weight. DIVA
Thanks, Dick, that's very informative, and a good idea you suggest, of posting replies on here. Here is a response from Terry Fox (Lab) Gleadless Valley Ward: All Members of the City Council are trustees of the Graves Park Charitable Trust. As such we will be required to consider the application from St Lukes to relocate their Hospice onto land at the Norton Nurseries site. All Members of the City Council, including myself, Cllr Weatherall and Cllr Reaney will be required to consider this issue when all the information has been presented and advice has been provided on the legal issues. St Lukes have not asked the Council to help them to investigate options for sites in the city which would provide suitable locations for a hospice. St Lukes have said themselves that they think that the Graves Park site would provide a wonderful location for their hospice. This is a view with which we concur, providing that any legal issues relating to this site could be satisfactorily resolved. Neither myself, nor any other Members of the Council will be able to make a judgement on whether or not this proposed project could proceed, until we have given this matter our proper consideration, in our role as Trustees of the Park. Only then will we have all the necessary information and legal advice in front of us. Yours Sincerely Councillor Terry Fox Councillor for Gleadless Valley Ward I wonder who the "we" is that he refers to in "we concur"?
