  3. I am one of the older people and I have not bled the country much at all. Free presciptions, free eye test, bus pass and as this year I'm 75 it will be free TV licence. I pay full council tax, I am not on benefits. I have worked for my pension and paid into the system paying tax to keep the less fortunate. As there was plenty of work in the 50's I also paid plenty of tax. I grew up during a war, with very little of anything including food. (My grandchild finds it difficult to believe I had only one doll.) so for my generation life has not been easy. I would think we have paid our way. hazel

  6. This thread seems to be in a decline on the 2nd page-- it's usually a sign of catching the eye of the Mods and it would be the law of sods if we could not print a line hazel
  7. My Dad was a furnacenman in the steelworks which was a key job meaning it was important that he stayed in his job. My Mom said he ran away to join up twice and each time they sent him back as they needed the steel more than they needed volunteers. I had 2 uncles in the navy, both petty officers, one a chief petty officer. one in the RAF who got shot down as he was a rear gunner.. 2 in the army one the youngest of Dad's brothers was a desert rat, went in at age 17 and his Mother never saw him for 8 years or so the story goes. I was lucky as they all came home but the RAF one was badly hurt and was never the same man again. hazel

  10. Ice patterns on the inside of bedroom windows, beautifuly traced ferns that melted when you breathed on them. Cold feet on lino floors, the smell of scorched paper as the coal fire was lit. My dad cooking sunday breakfast with reconstituted egg powder on no egg weeks. The smell in Butt Woods when the may blossom was out and the carpet of bluebells swished as you walked through. hazel

  16. I wore orange lipstick to match an orange poplin coat I had and under the coat I had a white dress with a thin black stripe Went through Coles Corner 's make up dept and heard the remark 'looks like a belisha beacon'. One of the hair products my Mom had was a pair of iron tongs that you heated up on the gas ring, then tried it out on newspaoer if the newapaper went brown they were ready to curl your hair, lost many a frizzle when too hot, she also had iron hair clips that made her hair look like corregated cardboard. . hazel
  17. That 'crappy one way street ) gives to Woodhouse a character of its own during the day. The bakery (sandwich shop) is always full and the greengrocers and the butchers give good value. There's also one of those shops that sells all the bits and pieces you need and can never find in department stores, think it usd to be called the Wizard. I don't think Woodhouse is as bad as it's painted during the day and we now have 2 policewomen on horseback clopping through the village, all adding to the general picture hazel

  23. Hi Rob, didn't realise you were still ill I thought you would have been given a pill ' take these for a week then come back and seek my advice', is the usual technique that the Doctor uses until he has to admit defeat he's surprised you are still on your feet you must see a consultant He says and the resultant, is, another appointment to meet. I've been to my Doctor today I've developed a wheeze when I lay down for a sleep thouht it would keep but the Doctor has asked for xray. So I've googled my plight on the net not sure of the result as yet it's surely not right I got such a fright when it mentioned a year with regret hazel
