  1. I have checked their website - but htere is no food menu - only cocktails. Do they still serve food ?? Tequila bar - West street
  2. I hadn't heard of a pit at birley before but would love to know more - where was it ??
  3. My uncle helped build the replica shop - in fact he did most of the carpentry in that place. Glad to see it get a mention.
  4. went to see dumpy last night at the boardwalk. the 25th anniversary tour - a very entertaining evening. The acoustic support act was particularly good !
  5. thank you for the helpful suggestions..... Tv was already connected to DVD by scart lead. Will try the other suggestions...... We already had a freeview box - before we bought the new telly - so may have to plug that back in - to connect the dvd to record through that. this new technology - so easy to use isn't it!
  6. I had a look at the ame72 website - i liked it a lot. I agree with quite a bit of what has been said on this thread. - the artistic and colourful pictures on derelict buildings and dedicated walls are very creative and i admire them. - what i think is tagging....... (a scrawly signature in one colour).... on the other hand is neither creative or admirable and can often be found illegally added to shop fronts and walls of houses. this I despise. perhaps if more was done in sheffield to support the former...... and more done to track down and prosecute the latter - perhaps all would be well in the world.... just my opinion.
  7. this might be a long shot as all tellys are different... but can anyone offer advice on how to set up a a dvd recorder to record freeview channels from my tv? - TV has inbuilt freeview - so no set top box or card thingy involved - DVD itself only finds the non-digital channels 1-5 I have read the instruction books for both sets (more like war and peace to be honest.....pages and pages of it) but still unable to see how to do this helpful suggestions please ?
  8. You are right about the steelworkers campaigning against it. This is a quote from the website in my original post. "Interestingly, one of the first groups in Sheffield to register their opposition to slavery were men working in the metal trades. In 1789, 769 Sheffield metalworkers petitioned Parliament against the slave trade; a brave statement, as abolition may well have affected their already slim livelihoods."
  9. The link in my original post takes you to pages full of information about James Montgomery who is probably the person you are describing. His statue is in the city centre.
  10. That's a really good point. I suppose I was over simplifying things. Before the abolition campaigns started - do you think people did know the true cost of their sugar ? was there enough awareness and knowledge in the everyday british family ? Once the campaigns began the awareness did increase and the shameful thing is how long it took before action was taken.
  11. There is a lot of press coverage and discussion of the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery - which led me to wonder if Sheffield had any links to the slave trade or the campaign to abolish it.... there is a link from the BBC - South Yorkshire website with a bit of info on this subject if anyone else wondered about this too. http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/articles/2007/02/27/abolition_alison_twells_sheffield_feature.shtml - It appears we had only minor connections with slavery itself - when laid alongside the histories of bristol, liverpool and london - i was very pleased to see the many links between sheffield and campaigns to abolish it - with a number of petitions etc. have a read and let me know what you think. Loopylou,
  12. i heard this second hand so pinch of salt may be required! A woman was knocked over outside of the red lion pub. The male driver of the car ran off from the scene. The female passenger in the car stayed at the scene and was suffering from shock.
  13. I'm afraid I agree with most of the other posters. Lose the tash - it looks a bit false. the beardy bit looks ok - but can put women off a bit. p.s. you have lovely brown eyes!
  14. my dad worked at edgars - not sure of the years though he was a fiitter and worked in the steel industry all his life until illness forced retirement at age 62 (1993) (he died a year later ) his name was ken roberts if anyone remembers him
  15. have a look on here.... www.picturesheffield.com
  16. I found dee street on the 1851 census - right where you all said it would be thank you. no trace of my relative though.. ... ah well I'll keep looking,
  17. CherryNicole - thank you for the map - very interesting - I know the general area now which is useful. Capricorn11 - thank you for the tip! Clocker - I've checked streetmap (2007!) and there is still a devonshire lane - but not a chester street - right in the centre of sheffield off devonshire street. Hennypenny - thank you for the offer - but the real fun is cracking it yourself. thanks again everyone! - i'm off on the research trail again
  18. On a marriage certificate from 1852 - My relative's address is listed as Dee Street. Presumably in sheffield - but where ? I am trying to locate this persons father in the census records and not having any luck. If I could work out where the road is - I might be able to search the census records for that particular area. any help or advice - very much appreciated.
  19. After moving into the new owlthorpe estate off Moorthorpe Rise FIVE years ago- the council are finally finishing the road off and building a much needed junction onto donetsk way. Bet the housing estate at the bottom of the hill are estatic - no more rat runners - pounding through their estate Are there other new estates in sheffield - where it took so long for the road to be 'adopted' by the council and properly surfaced ?
  20. this is a really good website for checking up old occupations from the census. have a look http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/a.html
  21. just read a news bulletin.. Richard hammond hurt on set - whilst trying to break the land speed record in a jet car.... i really hope he is ok - he is a good presenter and has a young family to care for. linky here http://uk.news.yahoo.com/20092006/140/top-gear-star-seriously-hurt-crash.html
  22. The problem: My mum parked her car on the side of the road and some numpty backed into it. Mum claimed on her car insurance, but was told the quote for the repair (£1500) costs more than the car (£500-£1000) - so tough luck. Initially they were going to write it off - but have now said she can have £450 for it - so that she can keep it and pay for the repairs herself. The car has a small dent above the wheelarch, has been passed roadworthy, so just looking for someone to put a second-hand panel on and give it a spray of paint.... do you know someone (and would recommend them) who may be interested in this bit of work. Cheers.....
  23. that's an interesting point. If customers move away - that will impact on profits which may bring about a change in longer term strategic thinking. I was thinking more short term - any loss of business will mean further loss of jobs. A number of companies are now marketing on UK contact centres etc... and making promises not to move to India etc... If a business has relativly low operating costs, and do lots of business online, they may still be able to compete on this basis. But a company like NU which has high operating costs needs to take a different approach to stay competitive.
