Can YOU name a female scientist??
seb toots replied to galanthusgal's topic in Padders' Bar: General Discussions
What about Marie Stopes ? She studied botany and geology for her B.Sc (first class) and gained a Ph.D. in palaeobotany. During her time as a lecturer in Palaeobotany at Manchester University attempted to prove the theory of the existence of Pangaea. She also opened the UK's first family planning clinic as well (1921). -

Rosalind Franklin died in 1958 and the Nobel Prize wasn't awarded to Crick & Watson until 1962. Unfortunately the rules of the Nobel Prize do not allow post-humous awards, which is why she did not receive the credit she deserved at the time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosalind_Franklin#Nobel_Prize James Watson revealed her role in the discovery of DNA when he wrote his personal account, The Double Helix, in 1968. -
I got one of these today after parking at Bensons, as did several other cars. They're not going to get a penny from me but I've a couple of questions : 1) Does anybody know if Bensons bought the car park from the MFI ? 2) If they send me letters threatening legal action, baliffs, bad credit rating etc can I go to the police about their harrassment ?

This is the best joke on the thread -
Yes, the Norfolk Arms. Unfortunately the policeman did say to me that there was a fatal accident on the A57.

We went to Ladybower earlier and passed an accident on the way there - biker was lying at the side of the road and looked in a bad way. On the way back we were stopped by the police and told that due to a fatal accident the A57 was closed at Strines. ** Not sure if it is the biker that has died ** Thoughts go out to the friends and family of whoever has died.

Virgin Media - have they increased the speed?
seb toots replied to Alastair's topic in Computer & Tech Chat
I tried the speed test yesterday evening and it was 4Mbps. Reset the modem today and now it's 10Mbps. Now there could be a difference because of the number of Virgin customers online at those times but even so, I'm impressed. -

Cheap rail tickets - are there any restrictions?
seb toots replied to craigmason's topic in Padders' Bar: General Discussions
You book the tickets for a specific train but apart from that there's no major restrictions. Usually you need to book 2 or 3 months in advance to get the cheapest prices but me and the OH went to London earlier this month for under £40 return (and first class both ways as well). -
A little common sense please

When I was younger there were 3 of us with the same name (including spelling) in my village but fortunately we went to different schools. It was very useful if my parents were told any tales about my misbehaviours ... "It wasn't me, must have been one of the other two" :-)
