  1. Thanks for the recommendations everyone. Jacqui, he is booked into Jaycliffe kennels near you. I told them you had recommended them them to me and they were very pleased Strix/Lottie - thanks for considering having him but it had never crossed my mind to ask someone to take him into their home over Christmas - it's already too busy and stressful a time! He will be fine in the kennels I'm sure as they sound lovely and there are lots of recommendations on the internet about them. Maybe after 2 weeks there he won't even want to come home!
  2. Hi all Just wondered if anyone knew of any recommended boarding kennels that would be open over Christmas. I'm away from 18th Dec to around the 30th. Just called Skew Hill as they are recommended on here and they will be closed over Christmas. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
  3. I learnt French back in the 70's at school and not really used it since. Just been on a 3 day sail across the Channel to Cherbourg and got stopped twice by French people asking me 1. the way to the showers 2. if creme fraiche coule be used with salad. I was surprised how much I undestood and managed to get back over to them. It's amazing how words come back to you when put in a situation where you have to use them. Using hand gestures (ie trying to explain a machine for shower tokens) helps of course as does the opening sentence of "Je suis Anglais, at je parle un peut Francasis malheureusement" said with an apologetic smile
  4. Since I moved to Portsmouth a year ago, my dog Clive often travels on the train to Sheffield with me. We get a train from Portsmouth to Waterloo which takes about an hour or so, then get the tube from Waterloo to St Pancras for the journey to Sheffield. All in all a 5hour trek door to door and he does it so well, bless him. The first time I made the journey I was terrified of having to use the tube as although we had made train journeys before, we'd never done the Underground. Clive was an absolute star and we do it fairly regularly now. He was fussed over by fellow train passengers, photographed by tourists on the tube and even given titbits by the normally unfriendly tube users. The only thing I was asked to do was to carry him on the escalators on the underground and even got help with my bags by the staff when I did that My advice would be to deffo go for the wee first as there is obviously nowhere for him to go on the long journey. I take Clive into the loos with me when I go, just to give him a leg stretch and also cos he would 'guard' our seat too well if I left him alone. The only problem I have is when the guard comes around to check the tickets and Clive takes great exception to a man stopping and talking to me (it's the standing over me thing that gets to him I think) so they get a good telling off from him. Also, when people come to sit beside us, I warn them that he can be a bit wary so may not want to be fussed straight away. Once they have sat down and been 'accepted' into our space he spends the rest of the journey nudging them for a bit of fuss , trying to get up on their knee or sharing their food On the whole I agree with a previous poster who said they love to see dogs on the train. I think that people sometimes like to see dogs in an 'out of context' place and judging by the fact that we rarely see other dogs on trains and not once yet on the tube, I can vouch for the fact that my experience has been a positive one. As long as you are in control of your dog and people can see that then you will be ok. I've had more annoying journeys listening to people's mobile phone conversations to be honest! Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  8. Good Luck with the move Technophobe. Have a friend who has lived up there for years and she loves it. It still has a strong 'village' and comunity feel, despite being on the outskirts of Shefftropolis. The only snag of course being that you are just that bit closer to Barnsley
  9. Oh! My! Gosh! **** CONGRATULATIONS **** See what you made me do?? I heard via the jungle drums an hour or so ago and had to come back on this forum to find you! Well, now that I've gone to all the trouble of setting up a new log-in and password I might stick around and keep an eye on you and bump(ette). PS - you weren't the only one I lost touch with. Maybe a hermit like, reclusive existence isn't really 'me' after all...Promise me that if it's a girl you will name her after me..?

  19. I found that being on SF on an NHS computer in between seeing patients warranted only a warning, however being locked up for two days in the police station and consequently not turning up for my shift (at my next job) did the trick nicely.
