  1. Well, it's a tricky one to sort out, but samssong and cuttsie both agree that Ernest Mills the cyclist was also a 'little mester'. The question is whether or not he was "your" Ernest Mills! The Ernest Mills who we know from other sources was a 'little mester', together with his father Willis Mills, was Ernest Henry Mills, born Oct-Dec 1900 - here is a scan from the 1911 census return, and here is a photo I found which I think must be him. He is most likely the Ernest Henry Mills who married Emily Wood at St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane in 1928.

The photo is not the Ernest Mills who I knew :)

  2. So... Doing the calculations..My 'potential' Grandfather Ernest Victor Mills was in fact aged 7 when his relative 'Charles Ernest' married Gertrude Heathcote.. and considering my father was born in 1929..that would make Ernest Victor 16 years old!! Hence the reason for the adoption?? I mean he was classed as a minor as in those days you were not classed as an adult until you reached the age of 21..

It was said and recognized that Ernest and Ellen Mills lived until the 1960's at 58 Gleadless Terrace.. and I had initial belief that my father's birth parents were called Ernest and Ellen Mills (nee Walker)...so that given they must have had my father at a very early age, had him adopted, but later married and stayed together..Hmmmm?

One wonders if they went on to have any more children together?

I was told that Ernest was a conscientious objector in the wars that where kicking around at that time or earlier .

He used to visit Russia and went all the way to Moscow on his bicycle in the 50's he gave me badges with various leaders faces on them ,he was very fond of Trotsky and would tell me what a great leader he was.

I never saw or heard of any children at no 58

  3. This is very interesting. Ernest Mills the Olympic cyclist was Ernest Victor Mills, born in Croydon in 1913 - see here for the Wikipedia article. As he lived at 58 Gleadless Crescent from the 1940s to the 1960s he was presumably related to the householder Charles Ernest Mills - perhaps a nephew or cousin. As samssong wrote, Ernest had relations called Taylor, one of whom was a Keith Taylor who would now be 73. The births index shows that a Keith R. Taylor was born in Sheffield in 1943, and the index gives his mother's maiden name as Heathcote. This was also Gertrude Mills' maiden name, and so it tallies with what we know.

In this thread, cuttsie confirms that Ernest was a committed communist and also a 'little mester' with his own workshop in Sheffield.

Some smashing stuff on the Forum int thi;)

  4. Hello Samssong.

Thank you so much for that info about Ernest and Ellen Mills.. After reading your post I looked online and found a black and white photograph of Ernest at work as a little Mester..and my jaw dropped as he is the image of my father as my father got older!! So it looks like we have found right Ellen n Ernest!

Amazing to think he was an Olympic cyclist as well as a well known little mester.

Did you know them personally, and if they had any more family?

Thank you again for your help :)

Ernest Mills was my mentor as a youngster ,he started me into club cycling and racing.

He explained his political beliefs to me and the basics have followed me all my life I am thank full to say .

They had relations called Taylor who lived on the Manor in Sheffield one of them being a Keith Taylor who will be 73 if alive today.

  5. I was a regular at The Raven from 1969 til about 1975. The landlord was "Lol" or "Floody". It had a very mixed clientele in the earlier part of that period which changed and became more student centred as time went on. I remember the members of McCloskey's Apocalypse often being there and on the night when "Monty Python's Flying Circus" was on everyone crammed into the telly room (to the left as you went in the front door).

Their roast beef sandwiches were the choice of some gourmets, being made with beef dripping on a crusty cob. Personally, I avoided them after trying one. It would have made a reasonable substitute for a cricket ball.

I first went in when I was in the last year of secondary school and saw my French teacher in there with a "lady of the night". We never acknowledged the event but things were never the same between us afterwards. I liked to go in during the daytime when it was quiet and the back room was flooded with light due to the glass skylights.

Smashing post person 6 our paths must have crossed along with EdmundH LOL.

  6. Fox always appears to be a yard off his man ..like he was for Readings first goal at Hillsborough..i don't see what he offers that's an improvement on Pudil, but like you say its been odd with him not being involved much...

You'd have to hope which-ever formation/starting 11 is selected they are prepared for an onslaught...its just a crying shame Hutchinson isn't fit..

Wednesday have two or three key players who are never fully fit and that has been the big problem over the last ten games.

  7. When United become the first English club to be promoted this weekend, will it eclipse the Brian Deane honour? :)

It's good to see so many new United supporters joining the Forum.

It should be a fantastic place next season.

Well have the under 11's against the under 12's and some even more childish than that![/quote)

Don't forget the floodlights , the fourth division championship and being the first United in all things United:hihi:

  8. Well, I was drinking some home made last night and have 2 bottles in the fridge for tonight about 5-6% ABV :)

You will need some basic knowledge of brewing and here is a youtube clip with a similar recipe.

My recipe for 16Ltr. (tsp = teaspoon)

    1K malt extract

    1K sugar

    1k root ginger

    2 lemons

    4 limes

    1 grapefruit

    1 large orange

    2 tsp pectolase

    1 tsp nutrient

    2 tsp wine yeast

    Additional spice to taste.

    2 tsp nutmeg

    1 tsp cinamon

    4 whole cloves

    Half tsp cayenne pepper

    How to:

You will need a large stockpot or pan that will hold at least 5Ltr.

Grate, slice or shred the ginger and add to pan. If sliced then bash it with a rolling pin.

Grate lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit zest and add to pan. Squeeze juice from fruit and add to pan. If using spice then add that to the pan. Pour over 3-4Ltr boiling water to cover ingredients, bring to the boil and gently simmer for around half hour. Take in the beautiful smell and stir often. Set to one side and allow to cool.

In a sterilised fermenting bin add the sugar and the malt and pour in contents of stockpot and stir till sugar and malt are dissolved. Top up to the 16Ltr mark with cold water and allow to cool to correct temp for yeast. Add pectolase, nutrient and yeast and give it a stir. After 5 days use a sieve and take solids out and continue fermenting till the bubbles have ceased in the airlock and it starts to clear. Transfer to PET bottles with half teaspoon of sugar in and leave in warm place for a few weeks to carbonate which is easy to tell by pressing the bottle side. Cool well in a fridge before drinking.

PM if you need some help and want to try some. ;)

Thanks for that I will give it a go .

In some enlightened Countries women are not allowed to drive a car , are stoned to death for having a bit of nucky and have to walk twelve steps behind the Lord and master who by the way seems to be able to do exactly what he wants without any problem .

David Moyes was having a bit of banter , the same banter that lasses in our Country get up to every single day .

If you can't put up with banter in the environment that is football journalism get out of the job, it happens to both sexes and by both sexes.

  10. Well things seem to have taken a turn for the worse since this thread started. 5 points from a possible 21 is it? I posted over 3 weeks ago that Chansiri had to decide whether to stick or twist and sticking looks like it is going to cost you dear.

Whilst I know the squad you have cannot be written off, there's no indication that Carlos has what it takes to get you over the line.

Talk in the air of bringing in Pearson now to replace Carlos, although probably without foundation?

Pearsons not daft , he will wait and see how the season turns out although I have been told by a pal of his that he his not interested in managing any of Sheffields teams.

Carlos seems to be to close to many of his players , this is O.K. when they are doing the business but when they are not then a Pearson up their arsse is what is needed.

  11. so let me get this straight, we get rid a manager whos got us into the play off positions twice in 2 seasons and go back to a period of uncertantity just because we had a slight defender boo boo in the 93rd minute?

I watch Wednesday week in week out and that defender boo boo you are on about happens time after time match after match .

At the same time we have a proven goal scorer Rhodes who gets no support whatsoever from midd field and the wide players .

We supporters who actually watch the Owls know that so!why can not the management team( who work with them day after day) sort it out .

We are not in a play off position by the way.

5 points out of the last 21 just isn't good enough.

Bang on Wednesday should have done a Leicester six games ago it may be to late now.

  12. As I read these threads along with other social media ones I often come across folk who tell all and sundry just how good they them selves are .

You know how it goes ,my house has got ten rooms or my car cost £££££££ , or I worked hard at school and ended up with a top job, or my kids are so perfect that all others pale into insignificance when compared .

You get em at every bar in every pub,= the latest holiday in Acapulco or the skiing season in the Alps followed by the plans to send little Oscar or Amelia to private school and so on .

When I was a kid in the forty's and fifty's we never heard discussions like this and any one who boasted how much better than us they were soon got brought down a peg or two .

So is blowing your own trumpet a modern thing or has it always been the norm.???
