  1. I have been reading about prominent Sheffield political activists from the 1930's and the name of a Frank Wilson keeps coming up .

It seems as though Frank was a communist leader at a very young age in our City ,he died in 1933 and his funeral was attended by large crowds .

Frank is buried in Burngreave cemetery and I wonder if any of our local historians have info on his life or why he was so popular.

I tried to find info on an existing thread but some one decided they didn't like it so it got closed.

  2. Another game we should be winning but didn't. The only positive is the defence is looking like its back to its best but I've said many times we aren't good enough for automatic and certainly wont be anytime this season. We need a couple of shrewd attacking signings if we are to have a chance. At the moment we'll just scrape into the playoffs but id of took that a couple of seasons back so not grumbling too much.

I dont buy the tired excuse either

The defenders where shocking , Wolves should have had a certain penalty and how they missed that open goal from three feet out is some thing that had to be seen to be believed.

Not our good defence but Wolves shocking miss.

  3. Wednesday are a point better off if you ask me, Wolves had one hit the bar, one hit the post, the biggest miss you will ever see and a nailed on penalty, we got out of jail!

If you can sneak points from bad performances (today and Saturday) then that's a bonus, but you cant have too many bad performances in a season!

We were shocking no excuses the tactics are wrong.

  4. I set of for Hillsborough today and as usual I am thinking today we will stuffem.

Today our stars who have cost millions will finally show us why our chairman has spent all the money on these players who should be setting this division alight .

So along with 31000 others I sit down hoping that Carlos has learned from the majority of home matches and instructed these stars that playing in your own half is not entertaining the customers and will not score you the hat full of goals that these paying lads and lasses are all anticipating.

Instead of the up and at em that we all are hoping for what happens ??the same old lets pass the ball about in our own half , lets pass it across the field and then back to defence and the goalkeeper, in other words lets defend at home as has happened for most of this season and especially in the last three home matches ,matches in which we have been fortunate not to lose often scrambling home in the last kick of the game .

Today we were worse than ever and Wolves (a poor team ) should have won the game at least 3-0 if we are honest , 31000 of us journeyed home frozen stiff and pithed off because either Carlos has got the tactics wrong or the players are not up for it .

My self I believe its the former and some one should tell them that the 31000 have gone out on a cold day and be it win ,lose or draw the most important thing is entertainment .

  5. Didn't Charlton knock that back last window? seem to remember it said Wednesday offered quite a large amount for him but wouldn't sell.

Charlton are in a mess ,the owners know that the Valley is worth a hundred million as building land .

In two years time when the Valley is no longer protected under a council act then Bingo?????

The supporters are up in arms against the owner.

  6. Here we go...

Another year and same old complaints and moaning about the honours system.

For goodness sake, the complete list is nearly 40 pages long.

It contains a range of people from well known to not known. There are millitary personnel, civil servants, royal staff, doctors, nurses, engineers, lawyers, company officers, directors, charity workers, volunteers and yes even some well known broadcasters, actors and sportsmen.

Whether people agree with it or not. If someone has dedicated their career to a sport or had long service as a broadcaster or entertainer which has attracted thousands/millions of fans THAT IS AN ACHIEVEMENT. If someone goes and represents the country at a major sporting event and is successful, thus inspiring thousands THAT IS AN ACHIEVEMENT.

Its quite obvious that the news will always focus on the dozen or so well known people because lets be honest, that's the only people that the wider population know or give a toss about.

Joe Bloggs the charity worker might well deserve his gong but if nobody knows him outside his immediate circle and he is no different to the hundreds of others on the honours list why would they get a mention in the papers or tv reports.

It gets tedious. Every year the list comes out. No bugger reads it beyond the headline names and then whinge and moan that no ordinary people are on it. Perhaps people ought to read it then they might understand the amount and range of people on it.

    Not one bricklayer agen!!!!

  7. Samssong - glad you got this sorted and well done RootsBooster for remembering about the mobile data setting. Not sure, but I think it is best to switch it off if not needed though. Should be easy enough now you know where it is. As it is a new phone, it might invalidate the warranty if you have it reformatted using Android and in any case, it is probably unnecessary now you have got it working to your satisfaction.

@Obelix - I understand about the Internet's dependence on Linux (mainly servers). As you raise the subject of Open Source it is worth mentioning that Next Web reports about the collaboration between this and Microsoft. It also mentions how successful 2016 has been for Microsoft. There is news for gamers too - Games May Run Better on Windows 10 Soon.

Yes I switch it off when not needed cheers every one.

No probs at the match today ,except for the match that is.

  8. I typed footway and my phone decided to put doorway!

    Is it four kerbs long.

    ---------- Post added 30-12-2016 at 15:33 ----------

It is? It's not show as one on the map I have here. Ergo it's perfectly permissible for the council to block it if it needs or merely wants to as it's not part of the highway.

Ok the footpath on Pinstone Street is not a public right of way you win ta ra.

  9. The council own the land. They can therefore drive vehicles onto it if they wish.

    It is a public footpath

Why should we employ a warden to tell them something that a competent road user should know?

So why are they not around before a match starts .

  10. The problem with a few CEO's parking inappropriately happened quite a few years ago. It was uncovered and the individuals were dealt with. I am not aware of any further issues in recent years.

The people receiving parking tickets at the match are parked in contravention of a restriction. If you do that, you can expect to receive a ticket. Whether or not they have got away with it before is immaterial.

I walk past the town hall quite a lot and I never see any "officials" parked on the doorway.

I have never mentioned parking in the door way which would be impossible due to the ramp and steps .

The spot I mention is on the foot path in front of the Town Hall fronting Pinstone Street where official cars can often be seen parked up .

Are the employees and officials who's illegal parking is ignored by the wardens different to ordinary citizens who would get a ticket immediately if they parked in that spot .

By the way you have still not answered why the side roads on Langsett Road are deemed as clearways because the tram runs on that road but the same does apply on Holme Lane or other main line routes ,

Can you also explain why there is not a warden in sight on match days before kick off when they could advise people on parking (inc away supporters ) but they some how mysteriously appear ten minutes after kick off , if its not to earn more money for the council ,or is it.
