  1. Re "Who tha nebbin at " I think it comes from the word NEB which is the name for the peak on the front of a flat cap. As it is directly above the eyes it is pointing straight at you when someone is looking right at you.
  2. hi riffraff. Still got mine along with four others on the team. Did your dad work at the omega at that time. If so what's his name,
  3. Paul. if I remember, Monday mornings me would empty the fridges in the room at the back of the kitchen. scrub them clean and mop the floor. Some names I remember. Ted Johnson - veg chef. his wife did the sweet trolley. Frank - fish and poultry. George- Pot washer. He wore the worst wig ever. Violet- head dish washer. Rene - dish washer .She said it was RENEY we called her REENI I did the salads and hors d, oeuvres trolley. Where you there in 1966 when Santos of Brazil played Sheff weds . They came to the Omega for the reception in the Alpha room. Chef John Mason put out the spectacular buffet ( with a little of our help ) Glazed hams . whole beef tongue . Whole salmon. He made a spun sugar vase with tall sugar roses . Those were the days. All the beef came on the bone. Lamb came whole .Veal was a whole leg. I had to trim them all. Going back to the buffet , at the end we were all invited to come out and meet the team. I picked up a programme of the evening and PELE signed it for me , got to shake his hand. If you remember any of this let me know,
  4. Paul, I started at the OMEGA in August 1965. John Mason was the chef. when did you leave ??
  5. That word is a blast from the past. Used to eat it out of a hot penny bun on the way to school . It jogged my memory , and all these years of not realizing my old buddy was having sherbert at the pub. he would come home Kalied. !!! ( sorry I couldn't resist it )
  6. Just asking, but this is not to be confused with the Porter Cottage on Sharrow Vale Rd is it. Sorry but years since I was in that area.
  7. Don't know if it was a cartoon strip of its own. yes I remember them, they h ad bones through their noses. They were part of another strip, maybe with Noddy and Big Ears. I think it was in the Dandy or Beano.
  8. Bought all mine at MERRILS on London RD at Highfields / Sharrow. They also had the rubber kits that you would fill with plaster of paris. If they came out o.k. you would paint them. More broke on removal than came out in one piece. as far as the airplane kits they had the balsa wood ones, and the plastic ones (and battleships) that you glued together and always seemed to have a part or two left over.
  9. Don't remember the year but I sure as heck remember hearing the bang !
  10. RE , The gales of ;62. and Newfield. Was anyone in the classroom when they were fixing the roof and hot pitch poured in and hit a boy on the shoulder. he moved just before a sizeable amount followed. I thing it was a Religeous Ed class.
  11. Another nickname I just remembered was a short guy called "mouse".He was short but no one dared pick on him.Bit of a scrapper.
  12. Reading some of the nicknames reminded me of one, sorry about what would be P C incorrect today, but because of his parentage was called 'caramac '. I hope no offence is taken by this post.
  13. I have left Sheffield, but it has never left me.
  14. In the fifties and early sixties, before they cleaned up the air, what with all the smog and early winter dark nights, leaving school at 3.00 pm sometimes felt like night school. !!!
  15. I need to clear up something here. Re ;sweetdexter; and your post. Your comment on a chef from Sheffield with the Clintons. The hendersons story was in the Star a few years ago and the president in question was George W Bush. The Clintons were catered for at a Malibu beach house and not the White House. I should know, It was me .
  16. Hi Jennifer, Sounds like I may be able to help. Born in Sheffield, working class background, chef by trade, got the proverbial " t shirt " Lived in sharrow ( hence my moniker ) As for your neck of the woods, L A is southern cal. Drop me a line.
  17. Is jamboree bag the answer to It's a party' ??
  18. Not seen any mention of "penny"arrow bars. Flat chewy toffee strips.
  19. Unless I missed it in an earlier post, does anyone know why it's called Taggy's. ? All these years and I don't know.
  20. A dash of that raspberry sauce on top of one of his cones was a treat I will never forget.

I wish you all a great time and wish I could be with you but the bus from LA wont get there on time.I hope some of you post photos of the event.I was at sharrow from about 1954 /55 til the disaster of my 11 plus in 61.I will raise a glass of Theakstons to you all and soberly sing, We are the 139 far far away, We live on bread and jam three times a day, Eggs and bacon we don't see, We have sawdust in our tea , We are one big family, Fading away, Fading away. A big DYB DYB DYB . DOB DOB DOB. TO you all. SHARROWYANK
  22. Sorry I can,t make it , but if anyone remembers Alan Hardy from Lansdown Rd and the 139th ,then Hello to you all.
  23. It was a scary night and the winds were deafening. I lived on Lansdown Rd and the next morning the road was littered with roof slates. It blew the roof off Newfield boys school. I remember later when the council was fixing the roof, we were in a classroom when hot roofing tar came through the ceiling and landed on a boys back, not a lot but enough to have him jumping up and down.Dont think he was hurt much but something you just remember.
  24. Thank you Oscar 2157, I just found my old school report from sharrow lane from 1960, and a couple from newfield 1962/63. Not something to put the red carpet out for, more like you don't deserve a tour with grades like that.! [ looked for my old dunces cap but couldn't find it] Will be having my old sentimental tour around the old Lansdowne rd area, and a pint in any pubs in the area still open. Cheers.
  25. I will be back in Sheffield next week for a family visit, after several years away. { hold the applause } Looking forward to seeing the old 139th site and sharrow lane school. Would like to see if i can get a tour of Newfield sec mod, just to see how much i remember, unless its closed for the holls. So many things on my list and so many people to see. As always i will stand across from the town hall and look at the clock tower and Vulcan and say I'm Home. If you see a not so old grey haired guy walking around the new castle market buying a load of soft herring roe,or standing at a counter with several saucers of cockles, whelks and winkles in front of him, come over and shout ay up yank, or something equally as welcoming. Boy am i looking forward to this.
