  1. Thanks for the input, 1066. I hope you get to read it, too ! I have seen some photos online of the shelling that the city took in the war. I think it's a testament to the hardiness of Sheffield and it's people that it didn't let that get in the way of its progress. It just rose from the ashes, rebuilt, and thrived.
  2. Well, this thread has sure taken an interesting turn.
  3. Oh, I'm aware. Personally, I think most tourist Meccas are overrated, though. And for what most families spend for a week at Disney World here, I'd rather spend filling up a passport with stamps. I do appreciate all the input so far. And I do realize that some of these figures will fluctuate with time, inflation, so forth. There is one great, big, looming danger that concerns me though: The fact that I may get over there and not want to come back . . . here.
  4. Yes, and for pleasure, because it looks like such an awesome place to be. But, given current personal budgetary restrictions, I am guessing it will be quite awhile before I can make it over there. And . . . I'm just going to ignore that Blades/Bramall Lane dig in the interest of civility. (sometime later . . . ) Wow! Looks like someone removed it altogether. Rad!
  5. I should add exclusive of airfare, since that can fluctuate. First, I would want to come during football season, so that I could take in a Blades game. Perhaps stay a week tops. Though, yes, I would love to stay longer. I imagine this might be a solo journey as the hubbers doesn't fly. I'm not too good for public transport, if that's the more affordable way to go. And I definitely DON'T see this happening this year, unless some uber-rich relative bites it and leaves me a crapton of cash. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
  6. Thanks, Mick. I'll definitely be in touch.
  7. Thanks, guys! I just submitted my registration to the s24su site, waiting for approval. I'll check out your links, Speedy. Right now, I need to get off here for awhile!
  8. Thanks, Andre. Can't wait to check that out.
  9. OK, here's the skinny. I don't know much about the rules/regs/culture of UK football, other than the fans are pretty passionate about it. About as passionate as some of us yanks are about baseball, American football, and the like, if not more so. To be honest, the only sport I really pay any attention to is college basketball here. And even then, only during the months of March and April, when the tournament is on. And now that my two favorite teams are out (Duke Blue Devils and Louisville Cardinals, if you're wondering) I don't have a dog in the fight at all. Though, as long as The University of North Carolina Tarheels or the University of Kentucky Wildcats don't win, I'll be quite pleased. Other than that, American sports don't thrill me at all. I need a resource on rules and regs of football and the essence of football culture in the UK, esp. as it pertains to The Blades. History of the club, community outreach, etc. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be swell! Thanks!
  10. Thank you, Chris. I will definitely give this a look. Though, do you think the group admins would mind someone like me (non-native, non-resident) joining?
  11. Not going for kitschy names, necessarily. The Cutler's Berth might work, though. Might just go with The Sheaf and leave it at that.
  12. Yeah, I knew about the plating. That could figure into the naming . . . an homage to the plating history, food's served on plates . . .
  13. (snort!) Yeah, I kinda figured that out early on. Hope that's not messing up the flow of things. I've actually thought about that for a name. Just need it to be two things that could also be used for eating. I suppose you could eat those things if you really tried hard, and were absolutely mad, but it wouldn't end well for you. Thinking something like, The Blade and Hook. Not that you can eat those, either, but you cut food with a blade and catch fish (to eat) with a hook. Or, The Sheaf and Cape. That one, of course, after the River Sheaf and the Cape near here. I don't know.
  14. Cool. Thanks for the info. ---------- Post added 19-03-2017 at 09:55 ---------- can anyone provide info on council estates in the handsworth area circa 1950s and 1960s? ---------- Post added 19-03-2017 at 10:05 ---------- OK, so I think I have settled on a name for my character's restaurant. It's something that draws on Sheffield's metalworks history and the seafaring history of the town where he currently resides. That aside, now I'm really interested in learning more about Sheffield itself. What it would have been like for someone growing up there in the 1960s and 70s.
