  1. There is one thing that the public and private sector have in common. There are no quick wins for the workers. If someone gets a pay out, some one else pays. When I worked in the private sector and the company was apparently not turning over enough to pay more, I would see the boss driving off in my pay rise. Its not so apparent in the public sector but they still rob peter to pay paul.
  2. Probably four wendy houses and no he only counts his chickens.
  3. I have falled foul of the veiola labellers... the black bin is a perfect storage unit. I think its a shame the whole city could not have green bins and a schedule. If you dont have space for a green bin, surely you dont create the appropriate volume of green waste. The trouble with the sacks is that they collect them once a month but you dont necessarily only create garden waste two days before the collection is due.
  4. My uncle uses plastic wendy houses, pref little tikes which you can get cheaply second hand. He reckons as you can wash they with easily they are better option. He picks them up at auctions.
  5. no I meant ranger not warden sorry http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/rangers/all-about-us/ranger-service-south-west-team
  6. The council park wardens often do foraging and its published in some of the leaflets you get from the library. Its usually called fungi foraging
  7. I have the most horrendous council trees outside my house, they were a lot smaller when I moved in over 20 years ago. The drop seeds, sap and leaves in a non stop cycle from March through to November. If I miss washing my car by a week I dont feel its safe to drive because the windows become cloudy and the wipers clog with leaves. I have a driveway but the tree is so big it covers most of it. It certainly would not bother me if my neighbour splashed my car or sent water down the drive that's just being petty. Its far nicer to have neighbours with a sense of pride in their surroundings than ones that never clean or sweep up.
  8. In my experience they turn up early when they want you to pay straight away. Perhaps they are feeling the pinch.
  9. Getting back on point to the original OP. I know I posted earlier that lots of people do it. HOWEVER. When I filled up there today both pumps have a lime green advertising picture on the pump with the writing smaller in the standard colour (black or green) at the bottom of the picture. I thought about this post as I went to do my selection and I have to say it probably was not as clear as it really should be considering how expensive a mistake could be. I did have a which one is it moment. There is a sticker above the pump but depending how tall you are it might be difficult to see - it would be eye level for a six footer without heels. If I were you I would take a photo of the pumps and write in and complain to their head office.
  10. There was a launderette on the road behind Broadfield Road but long gone. There is one on Chesterfield Road opposite (ish) the KFC and Goodman Sparks higher up.
  11. there are a few city learning centres in sheffield - it was four. http://www.ssclc.net/ They might as part of their community drop in e.g. http://www.ssclc.net/courses.html
  12. Abbey Lane is building an extension and is fairly good as is Meadowhead. I would say Woodseats. The buses along chesterfield road are frequent. Graves Park is very good as is Millhouses. Heeley City Farm is near. Traffic around Hillsborough is shocking. Woodseats is in supermarket triangle. Asda/Tescos/Morrisons/Sainsburys/Aldi
  13. If you have a fairly new touch or Iphone they dont work on the generic cables. I think they are available in tescos abbeydale fairly cheap.
  14. I thought Sheffield High was Co-Ed for Sixth Form just as Birkdale is. I think Tapton and King Edwards are generally regarded as the best. King Edwards has a massive intake. The Schools in West Sheffield are generally regarded as being the better A level schools or at least have a long standing reputation as such. There are strict distance rules for sixth form, so Tapton can be hard to get into for this reason although appeals can be successful if you get the entrance requirements which are higher for those entering at Sixth Form than those who are progressing within the school. (Think its how they get their position in the league tables) King Edwards is a language college with a second specialism (it might be the only one offering the Bacc). Tapton is science and does Music (not offered at Sheffield college). High Storrs specialises in performing arts (drama and dance). Some schools /academies have only just started doing A levels. Notre Dame and All Saints get good results - I think Notre Dame is the only outstanding ofsted rated school not that this makes a difference as at A level there is a degree of self study making it the young adult's responsibility to do well. These schools dont have a catchment in the same way as the others but they are obviously more relgious. It might be rebuilding which affects you though. King Edwards is still building, Tapton has just had academy status rejected. Silverdale might be about finished and High Storrs is just completing.
  15. With the cost of tuition fees, accommodation, maybe the odd text book and perhaps food. I think they have every right to ask for a discount. You can easily end up £40K in debt for a four year post grad living away from home and that's without socialising and before the tuition fee rise. Kids from one parent families who get a maintenance grant are the lucky ones. A family of four earning above £32k does not necessarily have the equivalent spare. Its not as if there are plenty of holiday jobs going either.
  16. since I probably go to a post office once a year - when a parcel force parcel gets returned to depot and ends up in the spar - I think I can cope if someone else is in front of me. Seats would probably be more annoying - older people might forget they were in a queue and start chatting.
  17. nothings changed as far as I know. I've seen a lot of people do it and known a few that have. You pay for the petrol and for the garage to drain the tank £££ expensive. edit *** see my later post I think they have put a very confusing advertisement on the pumps.
  18. Sheffield was where the Manpower Services Commission moved to in the 80s which morphed eventually into the DWP with lots of downsizing. Their computer division was outsourced to EDS which then changed to HP. All have been downsizing. The Home Office and BT have buildings here. The NHS is downsizing but when they recruit often want graduates. HSBC has a big building but often has recruitment freezes but often want graduates with experience. The biggest employers are probably the universities and schools. I've moved from London to Sheffield but have always found work.
  19. Living in Oughtibridge or Stannington can be expensive on taxis and transport. Meersbrook and Heeley are a shorter bus journey yet you could walk into town if the weather was bad. Sheffield does not have night buses.
  20. I've stopped to be a witness recently although it was not easy to pull over and a lot of motorists tooted at me. I was determined to do so as a van with three burly lads side swiped a car on a roundabout. It would be helpful if a witness could phone their own insurance company with the registration of what they saw, after all a lot of the insurers are either underwritten by the same people or owned by the same company. I could have been a witness more often than I have if it had been safer for me to do so.
  21. I thought this disappeared along with the mappin art gallery when they refurbished.
