  1. Hi. Douglas Lamb's book "A Pub on every corner" is out of print, but they have a copy in the archives, on the Sheffield FHS shelves. Your best place for old maps is Sheffield Local Studies Library on Surrey Street...they have numerous old maps. Also see Tony's reply at http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/ForumIndex.html Regards Tuppie
  2. Hi . These records are deposited with Sheffield archives. The burials are being transcribed at the present time...I have checked my file up to 1917 (although still ongoing) and there are no Timmins. Tuppie
  3. Hi These look like some of the burials, in case you don't already have them. 4. Hi. I remember seeing a tape worm pickled in a jar at the herbalists in the old rag and tag market...they had it on the counter. Tuppie
  5. Hi Jason. Let me know how you go on.... Kind regards Tuppie
  6. Hi Jason. It was yesterday...have sent you a PM. Tuppie
  7. Hi Jason. Have you tried the Derbyshire Times.? Tuppie
  8. Hi Jason. Have you seen this site. http://adoptionreunion.co.uk/ Tuppie
  9. Hi Jason. The following information seems to be relevent to your case. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/ From 30 December 2005 a birth relative wishing to make contact with an adopted person can apply to an approved Intermediary Agency. The Intermediary Agency will help facilitate contact between birth relatives and adopted people. The Intermediary Agency can apply to the General Register Office for the name of the organisation involved in the adoption or if that is not available the name of the court granting the adoption. In addition the Intermediary Agency can apply to the General Register Office for information from the Adoption Contact Register and post-adoptive information which will enable an application to be made for an adoption certificate. All this information can be used by the Intermediary Agency to decide whether to proceed but this will be subject to the views of the adopted person. Now the question is what or who is the Intermediary Agency.I'm sure that someone on this forum will tell us... Tuppie (p.s.spoke to you earlier)
  10. Birley can't be part of the seven hills of Sheffield as it was in Derbyshire until 1967. Birley and Hackenthorpe were in the parish of Beighton. Tuppie
  11. Hi. It's not complicated it is just a matter of elimination...and also proving the information you have been given is correct. The information I gave you for the marriage appears to be the correct one. I was told that my mother married at the age of 18, in fact she was 21......so bear in mind that peoples recollections of dates are not always correct. These are births registered in Sheffield and Ecclesall Bierlow and the only one where the date is out is Laura who was born in 1931 not 1927. This appears to be the correct family and the number of matches from the information you posted has convinced me. March quarter of 1931 Laura STEPHENSON mothers maiden name THOMPSON reference Ecclesall Bierlow 9c page 576. December quarter 1932 Stanley STEPHENSON mothers maiden name THOMPSON reference: Sheffield 9C page 696 Dec quarter of 1935 Marjorie STEPHENSON mothers maiden name THOMPSON reference Sheffield 9C page 571 June quarter 1937 Maureen STEPHENSON mothers maiden name THOMPSON reference: Sheffield 9C page 686 Kind Regards Tuppie
  12. I looked at this one last night and the only marriage I could find around the given time was a Laura THOMPSON to a Joseph H STEPHENSON...registered Sheffield December 1930 ref: 9C page 1253. As you have the dates of birth...you could obtain the birth certificates by applying to Sheffield Register office..this will give you the maiden name of Laura's mother...and if she was married twice it should also list her previous married name. 14. That looks like the correct registration Hugh. The death indexes give the date of birth of Laura Winifred STEPHENSON as 8th March 1911. Date of birth for Joseph Henry STEPHENSON is 3rd Feb 1909. Tuppie

  16. Is this a transcription..? If so then the old way of writing a capital "L" is often mistranscribed as an"S". I have come across quite a few instances of this on the census at Ancestry. They have transcribed one of my family names as Senathan...it is actually Linathan and is quite clear to me on the actual image. Tuppie
  17. Hi Sara. You need to work backwards one generation at a time and proving as you go. Do you know the names of any of the children of Charles and Alice OXLEY...? If so then a copy of the birth certificate will give the fathers name and occupation and the mothers name...plus the important detail..her maiden name. This will enable you to find a marriage certificate for these two, which will list their fathers names and occupations. From their ages on the marriage certificate you should be able to get the correct birth certificates...and then hopefully be back to the 1901 census. You do this by using the General Register Office indexes available online as pay to view or at the archives. Check out this site and use the "getting started" link. http://sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/index.html If you are stuck post a message on one of the Genealogy message boards...there are always people who will help you. Tuppie http://www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk
