You Can Now Do A Gcse In Sign Language

Of course we know that,  if his kid was deaf,   we wouldn't be able to do enough for deaf people.

If my lad was deaf I'd have learnt sign language and, with regular practice, I'd probably got pretty good at it.

So your point is ?

I would have happily taken this at GCSE instead of German.

These days more and more people are having issues with hearing loss, and it's only going to become more widespread as time passes, so this would have come in very handy

I took French, but, because I hardly ever used it, I forgot most of it pretty quickly.

People who won't forget it are people who use it regularly, but they'd almost certainly have learnt it anyway.....

Which is my whole point.

I learned sign language at an early age.

I only use it when a motorist sounds his horn at me...

and if we're feeling a bit tory about it: sign-language translation is a very real job.

Rejoice [that kids can now do a GCSE in sign language].

I think this answer says it all.

This is all about virtue signalling.

I don't know about you but I find those people doing sign language in the corner of the screen rather off putting. Is there any way to turn them off ?

And why are they necessary anyway (when you can just use subtitles) ?

Both my parents were deaf so learned to sign at a early age. I also taught a mate back in the 60's the basic sign alphabet he picked it up in less than 2hrs. I have always said it should have been taught to kids when they first started school. Sadly both my parents are long gone and I haven't used sign language for a long time.

You’re the TV expert, you tell us.

They don’t do sign language on the Light Programme or The Home Service. I’ve got an old valve radio that you can borrow to get you through these testing times.

Have you ever tried to follow the subtitles? They are a waste of time. I also had many scraps with people taking the micky out of deaf people.

Why is learning a language virtue signalling? Is learning French or German virtue signalling?

Although it's certainly true, as with most things we learn, if you don't use it you lose it, there are educational benefits of learning new skills and abilities beyond that particular subject.
