Public sector jobsworths love trolling the public, there's probably a residential course on how to wind-up the taxpayer with their miserable authoritarian we know best approach to life.

Barnsley has a much more reasonable approach which actually encourages the public to visit:

Parking is free for up to three hours in off-street car parks on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. After three hours, a rate of 50p per 30 minutes will be charged in the shopper zone car parks closest to the town centre, and 30p per 30 minutes in the commuter zone slightly further out of town. The maximum stay is 24 hours.

Parking is also free in off-street car parks after 5pm seven days a week.

a little reminder for the @Planner1

Who gives a toss? Barnsley is a small poxy market town. Sheffield is a major city, not even remotely the same comparison.

Here's what SCC say re on-street parking):

[From  https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/parking/city-centre-car-parking ]

    • Monday to Sunday: charging from 8am to 8:30pm
    • Monday to Saturday: special evening rate from 4.30pm to 8.30pm of £2
    • Sunday: special flat rate of £2 a day
    • no time limits for parking on street
    • single yellow lines: no parking from 8am to 8.30pm
    • motorcycles can use our pay and display parking for free at all times

    Sunday? £2? Crackers!

Nothing crackers about it. Plenty of people still frequent the city centre on a Sunday. The shops are open, the restaurants, cafes and bars are busy, the theatres still have performances, the cinemas still have showings, all those tens of thousands of residents living in the city still have visitors, the hotel still have guests....

It is a big city. It is not some tiny village with no attraction and no footfall.

If you look at the centre of Barnsley it is not that much different to the size of Sheffield.

As for it being a Market town, well that is ludicrous but I suspect that was just said for effect.

The biggest group using hotels in the city currently are Immigrants awaiting processing.

In population terms, Barnsley is less than half the size of Sheffield.

Have you not heard the term market town before? It’s pretty commonly used. It’s a town that has a market. Nothing derogatory, just a way of describing a type of town.

Barnsley has never had the larger shops that a city has. It’s main attraction has always been the market.

wooosh

I was not talking about the population as I am sure you were aware and just used it to prop up your case.

I was talking about the geographical size of the centre, but  as you cant win that one you conveniently "didnt notice" it.

Yes I have heard the term Market town before and in this instance I believe it was being used in a derogatory way.

Well done for comparing a large city centre with a small town and an out of town shopping centre.

I have some chalk and cheese here, would you like to compare those?
