Either so close to the living room fire that I felt sick …. any further away and it was freezing. Early morning wash meant freezing cold water.... unless mom felt generous and put kettle on. Much warmer than electric bar fires or storage heaters which we were encouraged to buy for modernisation! We had thick ice on the windows, so many blankets on the bed you could hardly move, Tin bath at the cellar head, mum had a copper that she used for washing, we heated water in that but we had to bathe in the kitchen then drag the bath out of the back door to empty it into the yard.
