Are Calais Migrants OUR Problem?

The French Ministry of the Interior estimated clandestine immigrants ("sans-papiers ") in France numbered anywhere  between 80,000 and 100,000 people to enter the country illegally each year.

How many of those do you think reach the UK?

Do you think that the French should keep the all? We live in a world where goods and people travel freely in many countries. So its difficult for individual countries to say no.

There were 39.2 million legal visits by overseas residents to the UK in 2017. Should we be worried about the few hundred that cross the channel, or the 39.2 million?

If we simply turned a blind eye to them though, would the numbers not increase quite rapidly and unsustainably?

People trafficking and illegal channel crossings costs lives.  Genuine asylum seekers should be helped but this has to be coordinated approach and the burden shouldn’t be disproportionately on certain countries.

Watching a live tv report this morning on Good Morning Britain from the English Channel.  Their reporter in a boat which had travelled close to the French coast, in their territorial waters, spots an inflatable dingy leaving the coast with a dozen men on board.

Next they spot a French Coast Guard vessel approach but make no effort to stop the dingy moving further away from the coast.  Instead all they do is shepherd / shadow it out of French waters into the main sea lane of the Channel.

The dingy of course just continues on its way until it enters UK waters, where it cuts its engine on the appearance of a Border Force vessel.

Once again, French authorities appear to be complicit in allowing illegal migrants to become our problem.

It doesn't matter how many times Priti Patel meets with her counterparts & strongly condemns French inaction, while ever you have the French failure to protect their own porous borders that allow illegal migrants into their country in the first place & then blatant complicity on the part of French agencies, the crossings will continue.

So what happened after the Border Force vessel appeared?

Crossing in that way is illegal and should be stopped, I dont disagree. We should do that in cooperation with other countries and spending a proportionate ammount of money on the border force.

But whilst we are discussing these boats, no-one is discussing the 200,000 access net migration coming here in other ways.

I'd still like to know what did the Border Force vessel do about that dinghy, in the TV piece referenced by Baron99.

I have it in mind, that it escorted the dinghy (or picked the occupants) to British shores.

International laws of the sea (1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea),  international refugee laws (1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, 1951 Refugee Convention), due process and all that ;)

There are roughly 400 000 000 people not trying to escape. Including half of the UK population.

So, your claim is pretty stupid really.

Because the UK is at the end of the line for refugees. Millions have already stayed on in Greece, Italy, Germany, France, Spain etc.

If the EU is so great why would they want to come to the over crowded  UK risking life and limb in a dinghy.

That’s a question that you’ve asked 12865433 times on Sheffield Forum.

Why not look up some of the answers that you’ve been given. They all make sense to anyone without an irrational fear of foreigners.

32nd most densely populated country in the world. No big deal.

Perhaps they speak English, have friends, family etc over here - a skill or profession we have shortages in.
