onenerveleft   10 #25 Posted February 5, 2015 Are you wilfully ignoring the fact that the British imperialists shot hundreds of thousands of animals that are now near extinction, or is it not relevant because now we have a new scapegoat?  imperialism is the go to argument of the brit hater. Curious why you chose the uk given your distain for our history
 Share this content via...
tinfoilhat   11 #26 Posted February 5, 2015 Are you wilfully ignoring the fact that the British imperialists shot hundreds of thousands of animals that are now near extinction, or is it not relevant because now we have a new scapegoat?  No I'm not. Far from it. But despite great leaps in knowledge about conservation people are determined to drive them to extinction. We ("we" being the west shot thousands of tigers, bison etc). One chap, if memory serves, quite literally chased the last remaining great auk to extinction. We learnt, well leant some stuff. Obviously we are doing our bit with habitat destruction and some questionable reintroduction of some species. But it's a biproduct of other things not just wilful destruction and cruelty. tzijlstra   11 #27 Posted February 5, 2015 imperialism is the go to argument of the brit hater. Curious why you chose the uk given your distain for our history  I love Brits, just not those that are blinkered. Have you ever bought a product with palm-oil in it? You are a murderer of Urang Utangs, but that narrative doesn't sell as well as the 'those thickos abroad, y'know, them that look different like!'.  If you really want to save these species, look beyond what you can see. TimmyR   10 #32 Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) The planet will survive without whales, pangolin, rhino, tigers and regardless of the temperature. The human race, on the other hand....  This is not really true. Biodiversity is critical to life. Every species we make extinct reduces the biodiversity and the alters the fine balance of nature. This could eventually start having an effect on our crops - bees are under threat, without bees a large number of our crops would not get pollinated which would cause a large scale reduction in food production, possibly famine and certainly economic hardship.  Yes in the long term these balances would adjust to compensate but in the short term it would be a large scale problem. The human race is consuming more than the world can provide (a symptom of which is extinction of species). Its only a matter of time before this starts affecting our way of life. tinfoilhat   11 #35 Posted February 6, 2015 The point is the planet will still be here..  Yeah it's amazing how a badly phrased thread title can completely negate the point I was trying to make. Tiger stew for everyone then.
 Share this content via...
skinz   10 #36 Posted February 6, 2015 Important though pangolins and whales undoubtedly are, the biggest threat to the planet is clearly global warming.  Which is mostly the result of human apathy I would think. Not ignoring greed too.
 Share this content via...
