I've now learned there is a fault with VM cable (I should have specified it was the cable service I was asking about) in my area.

I'm in Middlewood....and it's down here too.

"An engineer is on his way...estimated time that it will be restored is 2.25pm" - or so an automated voice has just told me.

The good part about this is that I have now....eventually....been able to sort out how to connect my mobile phone to my PC and am now tethering by the courtesy of THREE. :D

Why do BT think the area code for Leeds is 01132/01133 and the area code for Sheffield is 01142/01143.

It isn't. No wonder idiots get confused.

Although to be fair to them, Sheffield's phone numbers all had 2 appended onto the original list when the exchanges went digital and we changed from 0742 to 0114. I thought this was the same sort of thing with Leeds. When we ran out of numbers in the 2 ranges, they started on the 3 numbers i believe initially with things like VoIP numbers, so I guess that this is their way of saying that it affects people both in the 2 and 3 ranges in Sheffield (0114 2xxxxxx and 0114 3xxxxxx) People outside Sheffield seem to automatically append the 2 or 3 on as part of the area code because everyone's landline number here still starts with a 2 or a 3, even though technically it isn't part of the area code but the actual phone number.

Had their engineer out last week, apparently there's a problem with VM network in Sheffield, expected date to sort it is 4th Feb if I remember rightly. Sadly they haven't told their helpdesk people, so they spent about an hour the day before the engineer came out trying to remotely fix the problem, obviously to no avail.

Engineer said would be lucky to get 5 meg in the evenings until sorted, though I'm actually doing a bit better than that. No reduction in charges commensurate with reduced service, naturally.

There was a specific fault in S6 reported today at 1040ish and finally resolved sometime around 5ish.
