Inept council. Inept Planning Dept. Misguided vision.

One embarrassment after another. Major retailers will start to bypass the city. Just as major events planners do, just as many concert promoters do. Just as investors do. Just as developers do.

But its always someone elses fault isn't it.

The Council should be hanging their heads in shame for building it in the first place with no thought to what use it would be after the Student games. It's closing because hardly anybody uses it.

I probably don't understand the financial intricacies, but can any one explain why if the council had reserves of £60 million last year and has £167 million this year, why they can't use some of this to keep services ticking over until the financial situation improves?

Will the financial situation improve a great deal in South Yorkshire?

Something going off here. Sheffield Star said that budget cut proposals were up for discussion and decision made by end of March. Did anyone see this ?

They have until 4th March to finalise it all because they are hoping someone will come forward and volunteer to take over some of the libraries. From what they were saying on the BBC news and Radio Sheffield (this was leaked information apparently), DVS and Stocksbridge Leisure Centre will be closed.

Why does the place cost £700,000 a year to run? that is £2,000 per day, and then to double that with investment. Can someone please verify these claims?

I'd be interested in the answer to this as well. Does the council still owe money to whoever built it or owns the land maybe? A bit like PFI?

How many staff work there? 20 people on £20,000 per year is £400,000 straight away. I've no idea how many people do work there btw, but £700,000 a year isn't a lot. A big sporting venue should be making far in excess of that, unfortunately nobody is interested in Athletics apart from once every 4 years at the Olympics.
