cytine
Why do students expect discounts anyway? If you cannot afford pubs/bars etc don't go into them. Cook for yourselves, it's cheaper. Rich, how dare you demand discounts. If you had spoken to me like that you would have gone away without a discount but with a thick ear, you sound like an arrogant know-all. Who thinks they are "entitled" to everything.

I would've had you arrested for assault, and told you where to stick your discount, in terms not suitable for this forum

It's a two-way street - these places want to attract student business because overall they spend a lot of money. As to why not stay home where it's cheaper? Because they're young and they want to get out and socialise and have a good time. It's what young people like to do. Plenty of time later in life to sit indoors tutting about 'youth today' and going on about 'when I wor a lad' at every available opportunity. The Blonde
I have an nus extra card and get discounts at most high street shops and online. It costs £11 offline.
vit0
I used to get a free cheese burger in McDonald's with any order when I showed my NUS card, not sure if this is still valid.

Businesses target groups they think will spend money with them by making them offers to entice them to their particular business - like the currently discussed student discounts. Yes it is (or McFlurry- although some McD's only offer the cheeseburger) Matalan 10% New Look 10% (although for around 1-2wks at the beginning of new academinc year they do 20% off usually) Republic 10% In fact loads of places, I never think to ask when eating out though, I need an up to date list of where accepts student cards.
