Too good for Rangers and the SPL that is a cert, him along with Boyd are there prized assets, Valencia and quite a few more clubs have been showing an interest in him ever since his goal in the Champions league last season, always thought he was a brilliant defender and its a matter of time before he goes to a bigger club.

Why not look to the likes of Evatt from Blackpool good championship defender and a local lad also.

Transfer confirmed

United have agreed to the sale of defender Matt Kilgallon to Premiership outfit Sunderland.

The 26-year-old, who would be out of contract in the summer, has moved to the Stadium of Light for an undisclosed fee.

Kilgallon's future has been in the spotlight since the early Autumn and several bids or inquiries were received.

The uncertainty made Kevin Blackwell's task in selection and possible recruitment difficult as he was aware that the Club was vulnerable in the transfer window:

"There was nothing more that the Club could do because Matt was in the final months of his contract and exercising his right to speak to other clubs.

"Having lost first Michael Tonge and then James Beattie at the death in previous transfer windows, I didn't want the same thing to happen at the last minute again without having the chance to find a replacement.

"We have had to keep searching for someone of Killa's quality in case he went but that is difficult. I don't think there are many centre-backs like that around and that is why Premiership clubs have been looking at Killa."

Kilgallon joined United three years ago for £1.75m and has played 124 times for the club, although recently he has been out of the side with hamstring problem.

He will be ineligible for Sunderland's FA Cup tie at Portsmouth on Saturday but could make his debut for the Black Cats in the Premiership encounter at Everton on Wednesday.

United Chief Executive Trevor Birch said: "Given that Mathew could have walked away for nothing at the end of the season we were always going to be under some pressure if a sensible bid was received.

"I think both parties would have been happy to run out the contract, but once an offer of substance had been received which satisfied the club and the player then it was pretty difficult to ignore.

"We are sorry to see Matt go but our thoughts now are focussed on assisting the manager in further strengthening the squad after the arrivals of Mark Yeates and Marcel Seip."

Excellent business if the fee is to be believed.

Excellent business, im sorry but you Unitedites need to get real, every time you have a decent player you either sell them or they take the mick out of you and wont sign a new contract.

Sos lads but the last couple of years with the amount of decent players you have sold has told me that your at your limit success wise.

You would think it was United in debt not us with all the key players they sell.

Its getting quite obvious that any decent player doesant want to be at United and are using your club as a stop gap for bigger things.

I can understand you selling him because of the length of contract that remaind but how many times now have you either not been able to afford the wages or the players wants off?

Wheres all this bloody money you have got????????????????

Like our lass has just said, carry on doing it anyway its music to us Wednesdayites ears after all the hassle we get about not being able to keep hold of our best players and not being able to afford them.

Worrying times at United if you ask me, its not as though Blackwells replacing the players that are getting sold with at least the same amount of quality.

This sale, is understandable, good business and acceptable to the club, player and fans. That has not always been the case.

Had a sale of Ward been authorised by the club, we would be singing a different tune.

Wednesday can only dream of getting £2m for their players, we got that for a 4 month contract !!! FACT.

On a final point our sales on the whole have been for big money, the Walker Naughton deak £12m !! who could turn that down.? Tonge £2m for a then and still an average player. Beattie we almost got our money back too. Even Cotterill and Howard showed a return. We now sell on our terms as proven in the Killa deal. In the past we have sold on the cheap Deane, flo, Pesh etc.

Name the Owls last multi ££ sales. enough said. how long ago !!
